The Kings and Queens of England
The Kings and Queens of England | Ian Crofton
7 posts | 2 read | 1 reading | 4 to read
From the reign of Alfred the Great - the first king of Wessex to call himself 'king of England' - in the 9th century, to the shock of Norman invasion in the 11th, and from the brutal vicissitudes of late medieval kingship to the comfortable ceremonial of modern-day constitutional monarchy, the story of England's kings and queens is to a large degree that of England herself. Kings and Queens of England offers readable profiles of 59 English monarchs from Harold II to Henry VIII, and from Ethelred the Unready to Elizabeth II. Each monarch is elegantly profiled and the impact of their rule on wider English history clearly and concisely described and analysed. For every king and queen there is a detailed timeline, and the narrative is further amplified by display quotations, feature boxes, panels of key biographical facts, and - last but not least - by 150 lavish full-colour images. Ian Crofton recounts a 1000-year tale of murder, invasion, usurpation, adultery, divorce, civil war and revolution in a manner that is as entertaining as it is informative. The Kings and Queens of England is the perfect choice for anyone looking for an illustrated account of the English monarchy from the Anglo-Saxon era to the present

📘1800's or earlier
📙normally fiction but I read both happily 🙂
📚both (maybe a little more towards fantasy?)
📚biography
📚poetry, but I like drama too
📗neither really - I prefer savoury food but not big on salty foods, and sweet food is good in small amounts
📒both! And a birthright that they have to fight for is almost always a winner 😄

Pickpick

This book includes a chapter per King/Queen through the ages and is a great resource for understanding royal lineage, succession, intrigue and drama. Everything I have cross-referenced in other books and articles validates the history. I use this book as a reference guide for all things royal-historical. I have read many like it, but this is my hands down favorite

I bought this book of #royals when I was working through Shakespeare to keep the history and connections straight. Also came in handy for beloved films Becket and The Lion in Winter and the okay book The King's Hounds. #LyricalApril

Dragon Love those films! Especially loved Katherine Hepburn in Lion in ❄️ 7y
Cinfhen What a wonderful idea and probably fascinating encyclopedia of #royals 7y
candyturbo Love thothiss book, it is my reference guide when I watch historical or pseudo-historical TV. Also loved the film Becket. My cat when I was 16 was named Thomas Becket. We called him Tom and everyone just thought we were unoriginal. 😁 #royals 6y
