Bee Journal
Bee Journal | Sean Borodale

Bee Journal is a startlingly original poetry sequence: a poem-journal of beekeeping that chronicles the life of the hive, from the collection of a small nucleus on the first day to the capture of a swarm two years later. It observes the living architecture of the comb, the range and locality of the colony; its flights, flowers, water sources, parasites, lives and deaths. These poems were written at the hive wearing a veil and gloves, and the journal is an intrinsic part of the kinetic activity of keeping bees: making 'tiny, regular checks' in the turn around the central figure of the sun, and minute exploratory interventions through the round of the year. The book is full of moments of revelation - particularly of the relationship between the domestic and the wild. In attempting to record and invoke something of the complexity of the relationship between 'keeper' and 'kept' it tunes ear and speech towards the ecstasy of bees, between the known and the unknown. Because of its genesis as a working journal, there is here an unusual intimacy and deep scrutiny of life and death in nature. The language itself is dense and clotted, the imagery thrillingly fresh, and the observing eye close, scrupulous and full of wonder. Bee Journal is one of the most unusual and exciting poetry debuts in years.

My September wrap-up.
Neverwhere was the most entertaining.
The Great Passage was the nicest surprise.
Bee Journal is the one that got under my skin.

(And I spent too much, again, courtesy of Waterstones!)

A little poetry #bookhaul
Strictly speaking, they're not going on my TBR as I've already read them both: I returned the library copies yesterday. I've read Woods etc. twice this year and I just know I'll be returning to Bee Journal, too.

Cathythoughts Is this from the poetry library?! My husband would live in one of them ... I don‘t think we have one here ❤️💫 (edited) 6y
quietlycuriouskate @Cathythoughts These are from Waterstones. 😊 I've not ever been to the poetry library (I'm just able to borrow from their online collection) but if only it weren't in London I could live in one, too. Gloucester libraries don't do at all badly considering we're way out in the provinces! 6y

"You are not fully ordinary, bees."
I wasn't sure I'd enjoy this: poet Alice Oswald calls them, not disparagingly, pre-poems and note-poems (of which I have a deskful of my own: finish the things, damn it!). I loved it! It's the mundane and mysterious inseparable from each other, with a sense of immediacy throughout.
I opened the jar of honey I bought on holiday and sipped a little from a teaspoon: it was nothing less than a bee-spit sacrament!

BarbaraBB Did you change your Litsy handle? 6y
quietlycuriouskate @BarbaraBB I did. River Voice had run its course and when I set up my new blog I wanted my other online stuff to be part of a cohesive whole. 😊 6y
BarbaraBB I was a bit confused but I‘m glad you‘re still here. And I am going to check out your blog! 😘 6y

Stabbed!
Three stings to the right hand.
You, one to the neck.
Witches of black poison went screeching figures of eight,
all broomstick and flight path
Black poison throbbed.
My rivers wretched, staggering at undertow,
gripped my feet.

A record of beekeeping told in poems. 🐝🐝

Absolutely wonderful.

A beekeeper's journal in poem form, telling of a couple of years watching (and listening) to the hive. From high drama (24th/25th January is quite devastating!) to acute observation, much of it's written to his bee-friends themselves, as well as watching the seasons, plants, etc etc... At some points, he has bees sat on his hands while he's writing.

All strangely beautiful. 🐝
