pickI committed to read the CBC Reads list this year, and Corvus was on the list. It is a tale set in the future, and I would normally give it a swerve. I‘m so glad I didn‘t. Definitely recommend this book. It paints a bleak picture of what the world will look like in 70 years...think security and food scarcity. However, the main characters end up giving you hope.
I didn‘t finish CORVUS as planned because my mum needed me as grocery shopping muscle this morning, but I did make it through a nice chunk while I drank a free accidental mocha. (I ordered a variety that‘s not on the menu anymore, and the woman thought I said mocha, and when it came I figured, hey, I‘d drink it anyways because it wasn‘t like I could have the other thing.) Fifty pages to go!
Saturday book & breakfast: a fried egg smushed up over shredded potatoes so the yolk mingled with hot sauce & crumbled bleu cheese to produce deliciousness. Oh, and some bacon showed up, too.
I‘m hoping to finish CORVUS this morning. It‘s still seriously good, but I didn‘t get much time with it yesterday.
Are we seeing more Indigenous SFF hit the shelves than ever before, or have we just started to hear buzz about the stuff that‘s been here all along?
CORVUS is one of those SF Marketed As Litfic things, and it feels like a book I could fall in love with. It‘s also far from Cree writer Harold Johnson‘s first book, let alone his first SFMALF, so I suspect the “sudden” wealth of Indigenous SFF is a visibility thing more than anything else.
Another week; another library haul. I‘ve got a Squirrel Girl reread/catch-up in my near future!
I‘m excited about CORVUS, too. It‘s the second-to-last Canada Reads longlist title on my holds page, and it looks super good.

pickA unique dystopian novel that addresses culture, religion, war, politics, climate change, materialism, spiritualism and ultimately what it means to be human. I found the narrative to be jarring at times, but the more I read the more I enjoyed. This book has something to say and encourages thinking and feeling. Some of the characters that Harold Johnson created in this novel will resonate with me for a long time. I enjoyed the Raven narrator.
