Fighting Hislam
Fighting Hislam: Women, Faith and Sexism | Susan Carland
13 posts | 4 read | 1 reading | 8 to read
The Muslim community that is portrayed to the West is a misogynist's playground; within the Muslim community, feminism is often regarded with sneering hostility. Yet between those two views there is a group of Muslim women many do not believe exists: a diverse bunch who fight sexism from within, as committed to the fight as they are to their faith. Hemmed in by Islamophobia and sexism, they fight against sexism with their minds, words and bodies. Often, their biggest weapon is their religion. Here, Carland talks with Muslim women about how they are making a stand for their sex, while holding fast to their faith. At a time when the media trumpets scandalous revelations about life for women from Saudi Arabia to Indonesia, Muslim women are always spoken about and over, never with. In Fighting Hislam, that ends.

fucking magic quote: “I don‘t need to rely on Germaine Greer or a secular model in order to reclaim my dignity as a woman.”
I wish I could (atheist-)high five whoever said this :D

Patriarchal power structures even within religious organizations which will often mean sexism biases inherent (naturally, this is a generalization).

The ‘double-bind of performativity‘ which isn‘t unique to Muslim women.

Some amazing opinions on challenging stasis in thinking, and in action. I‘m starting to learn how deeply philosophical Islam can be and how the West seems bent on ignoring this.
(I say this as a largely content atheist, queer woman of colour, brought up Roman Catholic)

RaimeyGallant I was brought up RC too. Now I question EVERYTHING! ;) 7y

Serious about intersectional feminism? Some difficult things to consider about Western feminism models and ideals...

RaimeyGallant I think about it as large-scale trial and error. #MeToo is bringing some important issues to the table, no matter how elite the origins of the movement are. But some Western movements aren't well thought out. (Occupy *coughs*) I also wonder how much pragmatism/considerations of safety are involved in the differences between the movements. In some countries, combative can be a more dangerous approach. I have so much to learn about intersectional... 7y
RaimeyGallant ...feminism. 7y
mspixieears @RaimeyGallant the author of this book discusses that too - the ‘double bind‘. I still have so much to learn about intersectional feminism too, and want to read more Western feminist texts too. My planned reading year next year is going to be a fab one :D 7y
RaimeyGallant Awesome. I look forward to your reviews. Going to look up the double bind now. 7y

I‘m just over 20 pages in and already learning so much, and it‘s so well-written for a broader, non-academic audience. Sounds like Islam has a long tradition of wanting and striving for equality!

Pickpick

This is an academic work but is accessible to an interested non-academic reader. The writing is clear and there is an absence of academic lingo. If you have an interest in; Islam, faith, gender, activism, scripture, colonialism and/or feminism, you should read this text.

It's uncanny how often people will try to demonstrate their concern over alleged oppression of Muslim women by humiliating them.

Yesterday's #bookhaul. I've not had a #bookstoreaccident for quite a number of weeks (my lack of restraint when it comes to ebooks shall not be acknowledged), so was quite happy to find some stuff I wanted physical copies of. 🎉
