Daughter of the Gods: A Novel of Ancient Egypt
Daughter of the Gods: A Novel of Ancient Egypt | Stephanie Thornton
7 posts | 10 read | 12 to read
Egypt, 1400s BC. The pharaoh's pampered second daughter, lively, intelligent Hatshepsut, delights in racing her chariot through the marketplace and testing her archery skills in the Nile's marshlands. But the death of her elder sister, Neferubity, in a gruesome accident arising from Hatshepsut's games forces her to confront her guilt...and sets her on a profoundly changed course. Hatshepsut enters a loveless marriage with her half brother, Thut, to secure his claim to the Isis Throne and produce a male heir. But it is another of Thut's wives, the commoner Aset, who bears him a son, while Hatshepsut develops a searing attraction for his brilliant adviser Senenmut. And when Thut suddenly dies, Hatshepsut becomes de facto ruler, as regent to her two-year-old nephew. Once, Hatshepsut anticipated being free to live and love as she chose. Now she must put Egypt first. Ever daring, she will lead a vast army and build great temples, but always she will be torn between the demands of leadership and the desires of her heart. And even as she makes her boldest move of all, her enemies will plot her downfall.... Once again, Stephanie Thornton brings to life a remarkable woman from the distant past whose willingness to defy tradition changed the course of history.

I enjoyed this fictional history of Hatshepsut, but I had to take my time as it really tugged on the heart strings.

Hatshepsut was given a prophecy that followed her through this tale. “Your name will live forever. You shall be the downfall of those you love. Egypt will prosper, but those closest to you shall find only anguish and ruin.” I can only hope her life wasn‘t filled with quite so much hardship!

I haven‘t read much during the week as I have been busy at work.

I finished 1984, and made some progress on Daughter of the Gods and The Mountains Sing.
Some of my recent reads have been a touch depressing, so I started Mrs Mohr goes Missing instead of the Painted Bridge last week.

Today I gathered ingredients for Vietnamese food tomorrow, and read some more of the tagged book. It makes me miss Egypt!

Bookworm54 Pictured are some monuments built by Hatshepsut during her regency and while she was pharaoh. The Unfinished Obelisk (still in the quarry where it was being cut), a picture of her temple Djeser-Djeseru, and what I believe is a picture of one of her obelisks at Karnak temple (but I didn‘t label it, so it could be from her fathers reign. Pretty sure it is hers though!) 3y

Bookworm54 @Velvetfur it really is a beautiful place. If you ever get chance I would heartily recommend going! We did a cruise down the Nile with an extra week in Luxor. The cruises are a great way to see a lot of different places ☺️ 3y

I am really enjoying this (fictional) book about Hatshepsut!

As the daughter of the pharaoh, it is Hatshepsut‘s duty to marry her brother Thutmose and take the place of great royal wife once he ascends the throne.
She knows her duty, but she longs for something more, she wants to rule Egypt herself

She has just chosen a place for her royal tomb (pictured) but is currently unable to oversee it after betraying her brother by kissing another man...

Bookworm54 Cont. meaning she is shut away in the hall of women trying to play nice with her brothers newest (and now preganant) concubine. #AmongTheGods #Egypt 3y

In Ancient Egypt, the song of the Harper was inscribed in tombs along with the image of a blind harpist. It is believed that a harpist would play and sing this, during the mortuary feast.

Some versions held to more traditional views of the afterlife, while others encouraged the listener to seize the day.

The best known of these originally appeared in the tomb of a king named Intef.

Finally! Had to buy this book 3 times! 1st time paid for it and left it at the store. 2nd time ordered online and was lost in the mail. 3rd time was the charm. Really enjoyed this, Stephanie Thornton is great with whatever civilization she sets her novels in.
