The Weight of Night
The Weight of Night: A Novel of Suspense | Christine Carbo
7 posts | 7 read | 16 to read
On most days, the wilderness gave me peace. But not tonight. In a land sculpted by glaciers, the forest is on fire. Thick smoke chokes the mountain air and casts an apocalyptic glow over the imposing peaks and vistas of Montanas Glacier National Park. When firefighters are called in to dig firebreaks near the small town bordering the park, a crew member is shocked to unearth a shallow grave containing human remains. Park Police Officer Monty Harris is summoned to the site to conduct an excavation. But with an incendiary monster threatening to consume the town, Monty seeks help from Gretchen Larson, the countys lead crime scene investigator. While the two work frantically to determine the true identity of the victim, a teenager suddenly disappears from one of the campgrounds in Glacier. Could the cases somehow be connected? As chances for recovery of the missing boy grow slimmer and the FBI finds only dead ends, Gretchen and Monty desperately race to fit all the pieces together while battling time, the elements, and their own unresolved inner conflicts. The Weight of Night is the latest novel in an award-winning series which paints a moving picture of complex, flawed people fighting to make their way in a wilderness where little is black or white (Publishers Weekly). It is a gripping tribute to the power of redemption set against one of Americas most majestic and unforgiving landscapes.

With raging wildfires in the background, two mysteries unfold at Glacier National Park—the disappearance of a boy and the discovery of old human remains. The setting and the character development of this novel are terrific and the plot is solid. Apparently this is the 3rd in a series, though I didn‘t feel like I was missing anything by jumping into the middle. I‘ll definitely be reading the rest of the series.

Bookzombie I started with the second one, lol. I enjoy them on audio. I read the first three and I have the fourth one on hold on Libby. 6y
Hooked_on_books @Bookzombie Cool! I like a series that lets you dive in anywhere. I actually have the first one on my Nook. Do they all feature Gretchen or just Monty? She was my favorite character. 6y
Bookzombie The first book has a different main character and Monty is part of it. I can‘t remember if Gretchen is in it. The second book has Monty as the main character and Gretchen is in it, but as more of a side character. This one was the first where she flipped back and forth between POVs. The fourth‘s main character is the female FBI agent from this one per the summary. I really enjoyed Gretchen in this one too. 6y
Hooked_on_books @Bookzombie Interesting. Almost like Tana French, moving between characters but having the same cast there. I think that might help keep the series fresher over time and prevent boredom in the author. 6y
Bookzombie @Hooked_on_books I hadn‘t thought about it, but that is a good comparison. 6y

While firefighters are battling wildfires in Glacier National Park, they uncover the bones of a body. Monty, a park police officer, and Gretchen, a CSI, begin investigating, but the case is overshadowed by the search for a missing teen. I enjoy the characters and story, but I especially enjoy the setting of this series. #seriescatchup

DivaDiane Oh! I‘ve been there (my brother moved to Missoula, MT 25 years ago)! Sounds interesting. 6y
Bookzombie @DivaDiane Did you get to go to the park? I bet the area around Missoula is beautiful too. 6y
DivaDiane Yes, I‘ve been to Glacier several times, that‘s what I meant. Missoula is a great town! 6y
