A fascinating and gripping novel that delves into the restless mind of a soldier who never truly left the fight. Symbolically located on a solitary vessel somewhere past nowhere in the middle of space, the man who tried to isolate himself to cope with PTSD is forced into reckoning with his desire to be heard and understood.
“This is the thing about being a hero: It‘s all about when you get your picture taken. I‘ll be a hero for the rest of my life, I suppose. So long as I spend it in here with the door shut, hugging my knees, and staying away from anymore cameras.”
This book is being made into a show! I have not read it, but it sounds interesting. Have any of you read this? Thoughts?

Hugh Howey said he was in LA to meet about 3 different ‘projects‘. Eeeeeeee! I figure WOOL is a given, and I heard about Beacon 23 turning into a tv series, but the 3rd... hmm. Maybe SAND, or Half Way Home? Super excited!
'I also very purposefully employ the caps button, because they can, in this way, hear us scream in space:'

A slight twist - this series by Hugh Howey takes place in the 23rd century. Just like lighthouses help guide ships, there are now beacons in space helping spaceships stay safe. Howey always writes an interesting story. These were shorter kindle books I got hooked on.
Not his best writing, I really enjoyed WOOL though, and but the best book I've read, but there are some great quotes in this book. In the end, a decent read that made me laugh a few times. On the hand, PTSD and dementia are serious, this book gives a little light into what that might look like for someone.
This book is odd, a quick read but left me wanting. It's reimagined fan fiction for Robert A. Heinlein's book, "Starship Troopers." It's told from the POV of a former soldier who has PTSD and tries to avoid anything and everything. The end wasn't satisfying to me at all and the character isn't someone you cheer for, also not an antihero. Just a cynical asshole. I mean, I am too but this character was frustrating. Better writing than WOOL at least.
This book was suggested to me by a student, so I felt the need to read it, since I'm always asking them to read. Not my usual genre. Good story line and characters.
Great story! Well done audiobook. I felt a bit of Sam Rockwell's movie 'Moon' and a bit of the film 'Gravity' as well as 'The Martian'. Howey continues to do no wrong.
Decided to dive into this one since it's fairly short. Really good so far! If you like WOOL you'll like this.
TV series in the works! - http://variety.com/2016/tv/news/studio-8-developing-beacon-23-josh-friedman-1201...
Great book, one that shows the truth of mental illness. For some people, Digger's actions and thoughts are very, very real. I am hugely uncomfortable with the conclusion, for reasons I'll mention in spoiler comment, but I definitely recommend the read.
Stealing this from @BookishFeminist 's stacks 😉 for a few hours. The Wool Omnibus has been on my TBR for ages - this looks like a quicker read to introduce me to Howey's work.
Downloaded this one last night but it is down low on my list. Anyone read it? A friend recommended it and the price was right.
"Eighteen more months on this shift, alone, my back to the sea, tending to my little beacon with all its pretty little noises."
I'm reading this with my Science Fiction Book Club. I'm pacing it as a serial, as originally written, and it is a good read. The image is a collection from the book.
