The Terrible and Wonderful Reasons Why I Run Long Distances
The Terrible and Wonderful Reasons Why I Run Long Distances | The Oatmeal, Matthew Inman
10 posts | 21 read | 3 to read
This is not just a book about running. It's a book about cupcakes. It's a book about suffering. It's a book about gluttony, vanity, bliss, electrical storms, ranch dressing, and Godzilla. It's a book about all the terrible and wonderful reasons we wake up each day and propel our bodies through rain, shine, heaven, and hell. From #1 New York Times best-selling author, Matthew Inman, AKA The Oatmeal, comes this hilarious, beautiful, poignant collection of comics and stories about running, eating, and one cartoonist's reasons for jogging across mountains until his toenails fall off. Containing over 70 pages of never-before-seen material, including "A Lazy Cartoonist's Guide to Becoming a Runner" and "The Blerch's Guide to Dieting," this book also comes with Blerch race stickers.

I‘m still 4 books behind on my Goodreads challenge, and I didn‘t even touch a treadmill in the month of June (& I work at a gym). So, needless to say, I failed miserably at by June #BFC2022 goals.
So for July…I‘m taking a mulligan and keeping the same goals:
☀️ Catch up on my 2022 Goodreads reading challenge (I.e. finish 6 or 7 books)
☀️ Do a 5k on the first and last days of the month (with training in between), and see how my time improves.
⬇️

Maggie4483 ↪️ I‘m already doing better than last month. Got off work and did my 1st of the month 5k (we don‘t need to talk about my time). (edited) 2y
wisherwishinguponastar Good luck with the 5K! You've got this! 2y
wanderinglynn Sometimes we need a month of nothing. That‘s okay. Great goals for July! And remember, the important thing is not about how fast you get there. It‘s that you started. 🙌🏻 2y

June #BFC2022 goals:

☀️ Do a 5k on the first and last days of the month (with training in between), and see how my time improves.

The only thing more embarrassing than how behind I am on my reading challenge is how long it‘s going to take me to do 3.1 miles tomorrow.

wanderinglynn Great goals. 🎉 Just keep in mind that it is not how fast you go, it is that you go. The first step is always the hardest. You got this! 🙌🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 2y

Do I got this book on Overdrive because I wanted a goofy comic to read in bed, to turn my brain off after a long week. It was perfect - it outright cracked me up. (Also, clearly running is on my brain. Damn it nature be springtime already so I can make a real shot at this.)

My #bookishresolutions are to read at least 75 books and to complete at least two reading challenges. This book fit the category of sports book for the #ReadHarder2017 challenge. It was equal measures hysterical and inspirational. So funny!

Sports-themed #funfridayphoto goes to The Oatmeal. He writes about long-long-LONG distance running but also creates amazingly filthy games like Exploding Kittens.

I decided to go with a sports book that made me laugh for today's #FunFridayPhoto. I love this book about running by The Oatmeals's Matthew Inman. This book has actually inspired me and made me feel better about running. He talks about how hard it is to keep at it and to ignore that inner voice that tells you to give up, aka the Blerch. His cartoons are hilarious, but he also discusses some of his past and current struggles with being healthy.

Spiderfelt Absolutely. Spot on. 8y

Day 5 of #augustofpages is sport themed. I don't have (and rarely read) sporty books - but I do like the oatmeal and he has a whole book about running. Boom. Done. #augustphotochallenge

Settling in with some inspiration before my long run tomorrow morning! Matthew does a wonderful job of capturing the reality of being a runner in all of its beautiful complexities.
