Dracula | Bram Stoker

Okay, so I loved Dracula! Yes, I wish I had read it in the order Stoker wrote it before doing #DraculaDaily, but it was still really good. And I tried one of Jonathan Harker‘s yummy recipes (Paprika Chicken may be a new favorite for me too). Next weekend I‘ll be watching the movie. And then the parody movie. I couldn‘t help but hear Mel Brooks whenever Van Helsing spoke. I am definitely my father‘s daughter. 😂

Hi #LMPBC Group A!! I replied to Deborah‘s email on Thursday, but I got an undeliverable response back, so I thought I‘d better ask here instead. First, Deborah, all your selections look great! I‘ll look through my stacks for some options for my book, but before I do, are there any subject matters/content issues I should look out for? Any genres that anyone in the group doesn‘t read? Any theme we want to stick to? As for me, I‘m open to anything!

Kimzey Thanks! I‘ll read almost anything. I‘m hoping to make progress on my TBR list, so can make suggestions from my shelves of unread books, once I know the wishes of the group. I‘ll go look for the email, which I apparently missed! 3w
arubabookwoman HI Maggie--I rec'd your response in email, so your response was actually delivered to me. I've been traveling all week and just got home and haven't had time to respond further and make some final selections from my shelves. I will try to post/email tomorrow with a few books to make a final choice from. 3w
arubabookwoman You may have got an undeliverable message because in the initial email I sent I mistyped Melanie's address. I later forwarded my message to her correct email, but if you hit "reply all" to my initial email, it had the wrong address for Melanie. Sorry for the confusion. 3w
See All 9 Comments
arubabookwoman Just in general I'm not a fan of horror, romance or YA. But I'll read anything if it's good. I like translated fiction, books set in other cultures, "classics in their own country" and as of now I'm thinking my choice might be in that category. 3w
Kimzey Hi, I checked and I still can‘t find the email. Would love to know the suggestions. 3w
arubabookwoman @Kimzey @Kappadeemom @Maggie4483 I've just sent another email hopefully to everyone's correct email. Leave a note here if you don't receive it. I listed my potential choices (some changed from my 1st email), and am really looking forward to seeing all of your choices and to getting to know you! 3w
arubabookwoman @Kimzey @kappadeemom @maggie4483 just got a notification that the email to Kimzy was returned undeliverable (I did not get such a notification for the first email I sent). And now I can't find the LMPBC email with all of our addresses on it. Can either Maggie or Melanie try to forward the email to Kimzey. Also if one of you could forward the email with all our addresses to me I'd appreciate it. 3w
Maggie4483 @arubabookwoman @Kimzey @Kappadeemom okay, I just forwarded both emails to everyone. Let me know if y‘all didn‘t get them! 3w

I was so sad to learn of Julie Powell‘s passing. I read Julie & Julia in my favorite class in college, and loved every minute of it. It was snarky and hilarious, but also really beautiful and poignant. I always point to the chapter this quote comes from when I try to sell this book. Powell spends an exhausting day searching all over NYC for a marrow bone for a recipe. When she finally gets it home, she realizes she has no way to actually…(cont‘d)

Julsmarshall So sad 😭 1mo
Maggie4483 …get the marrow OUT of the marrow bone. But when she finally sits down to eat, this is her reaction. What was significant about this day of struggle, followed by a moment of joy and triumph for Powell (whose day job involved assisting 9/11 victims and their families in an office directly across the street from Ground Zero)? This all happened on September 11, 2002. (edited) 1mo
Maggie4483 @Julsmarshall I know😢. I don‘t usually get emotional over the deaths of celebrities/authors/public figures, but this one got me. 1mo

One Vote, Two Votes, I Vote, You Vote | Bonnie Worth, Katherine Ross
post image

Not book related, but I wanted to share. We are hosting early voting in the building where I work. Sitting in my office, I can occasionally hear the people in the room where the polls are located, and all week, I‘ve heard cheering coming from that room every few hours or so. I finally figured out why (cont‘d)

Maggie4483 Walking by that room this afternoon, I saw what looked like a family (mom, dad, and older teenager) at the table where IDs are checked and the ballot is handed out. As the teen was handed his ballot, the poll worker shouted, “WE‘VE GOT A FIRST TIME VOTER!!” And all the rest of the staff cheered and clapped. Then a few minutes later, when that same kid deposited his ballot, they cheered for him again. That kid‘s smile…🥹 1mo
Texreader Yes!! I took my daughter and the workers cheered when I told them it was her first time to vote! 🎊🎉 1mo
Maggie4483 @Texreader I love that! This is a new group of poll workers than in elections past, and they seem much more enthusiastic. 1mo

Finished this last week for my IRL book club. I think the consensus was that none of us really liked the out-of-left-field twist 3/4 of the way through. If there had been anything to even remotely hint at the direction it would take, it could have been great. It just felt a little lazy, like Sager wrote himself into a corner and had to pull out the modern-day thriller version of deus ex machina to get out of it.

Maggie4483 This was my first meeting with this book group. I‘m not sure how well I fit it, but I still had fun. An evening out really helped me feel like a real person for the first time in a while. 2mo

I have a dilemma. My book is on the other side of the room, but as soon as I move, cuddle time with Maya will be over. 😭😿
I had to take her to the emergency vet a few weeks ago. She‘s fine now, but I realized that she‘s lived longer than any other kitty I‘ve had. I‘ve been trying to soak up every minute with her that I can. Because although I don‘t know how many minutes she has left, I do know it‘s not enough.

A pick for both the book and movie! I read this with two of my coworkers, and we played hooky today to go see it.
This was like a combination of all of my favorites: strong To Kill A Mockingbird vibes (how Atticus Finch was David Strathairn!?!?), part coming of age, with a murder mystery thrown in too. All the 🌟 🌟 🌟 !!!
This book made me wish I could go back and fall in love for the first time all over again. ❤️❤️❤️

I love this scene. Three women, all at different stages of their lives, all grieving the same loss…but in very different ways.
And this line…so true. In my younger days, I always thought romance equaled grand gestures & excitement & drama. Now at almost 40, I realize that romance isn‘t hearts and flowers. It‘s someone who knows how you take your coffee, or fixes a flat tire for you. It‘s finding someone who calms you just with their presence.

I‘m not feeling very good about myself today. Sometimes I, too, feel like the only thing I‘m good for is alphabetizing things. Fortunately, I hoard Jeopardy! episodes for just such an occasion.

But, on a positive note, I got to play with a teeny, tiny kitten at work today. His litter was in an old car that we bought for a vehicle extrication class, but he was the only one who survived. He was sooo sweet, though. I almost brought him home.

Maggie4483 @booksellerofyourdiscontent thank you! Fortunately I work with people who know about car stuff, so I was able to get some help there. But it happened after everyone else was gone for the day, and I don‘t have a lot of friends or family close by that I felt comfortable calling for help right then. 6mo

Wondering if I can call in sick tomorrow to read…cuz all I want to do is read all 25 of these immediately.

The blue highlighted squares and list below are my Chapter-a-Day reads (hopefully). And there are a couple that I‘m thisclose to finishing. I think June is going to be a good reading month.

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!!! I was honestly thinking the same thing... so many good books around here!!! 6mo

I‘m so excited for my first #Bookspin #DoubleBookspin! And I couldn‘t have asked for better picks. They are both rereads (I hope that counts 😬), but were planned rereads. I set a goal at the first of the year to read all of Maya Angelou‘s books (obviously I‘m making GREAT progress 😂).
And if all goes well, I‘ll be complaining about the AppleTV adaptation of The Shining Girls by the end of the month.

KristiAhlers Oh I love your double spin book! I read that a bit ago and I loved how she tells her story. 6mo
Maggie4483 @KristiAhlers me too! I read it for one of my favorite classes in college (a women‘s lit class called Women, Life Writing, and Food), and find myself going back to it every few years. 6mo
TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! And yes, any book on your TBR counts - and I have loads of rereads on mine!! 😁 6mo

June #BFC2022 goals:

☀️ Catch up on my 2022 Goodreads reading challenge (I.e. finish 6 or 7 books)
☀️ Do a 5k on the first and last days of the month (with training in between), and see how my time improves.

The only thing more embarrassing than how behind I am on my reading challenge is how long it‘s going to take me to do 3.1 miles tomorrow.

wanderinglynn Great goals. 🎉 Just keep in mind that it is not how fast you go, it is that you go. The first step is always the hardest. You got this! 🙌🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 6mo
