When the Night Comes
When the Night Comes: A Novel | Favel Parrett
4 posts | 3 read | 3 to read
Longlisted for the prestigious Miles Franklin Award, this moving account of the depth of ordinary lives (Library Journal, starred review) tells the story of a young Tasmanian girl and a Danish sailor and the brief encounter that leaves a lasting impact on both. Isla is a lonely girl who moves to Hobart with her mother and brother to try to better their lives. Its not really working until they meet Bo, a crewman on an Antarctic supply ship, the Nella Dan, who shares stories about his adventures with themhis travels, bird watching, his home in Denmark, and life on board the ship. Isla is struggling to learn what truly matters and who to trust, while this modern Viking is searching to understand his past and to find a place in this world for himself. Though their time together is short, it is enough to change the course of both their lives. Praised for writing that is vivid and distinct (Library Journal, starred review) and exquisite in its simplicity and eloquence (Kirkus Reviews), Favel Parrett delivers a stunningly beautiful novelspare but memorable (Booklist)about the remarkable and unexpected bond forged between strangers.

I have bookmail! Isn‘t it pretty? It‘s also 6pm on Friday, and I‘ve just turned of the work phone. Plus, the gas engineer came at 5pm yesterday, so we‘ve had a full 24 hours of heating & hot water & only wearing 1 jumper at a time 🎉🎉🎉

Happy Weekend, Litsy!

Pickpick

This is the third novel I‘ve read of Favel Parrett‘s. It is the second of her three books and she has become a #mustreadauthor for me. My favourite is still her first novel, Past The Shallows.

In this book her stunning yet sparse prose illuminates Tasmania and Antarctica, and I loved her beautifully drawn characters.

I‘m ready and waiting for her next offering 🤗🤞😍.

Set in Tasmania and Antarctica, by Favel Parrett. When the Night Comes tells the story of a young girl, learning what is important in life and who to trust; and of a crewman on the Antarctic supply ship, the Nella Dan, a modern Viking searching to understand his past and find a place in this world for himself.

When their paths cross, he teaches her the gift of stillness, of watching birds and shares tales of sailing south to the ice.

Jamesfahyauthor I'm just about to start this one. Anyone read it? 7y
