Dark Corners: A Novel | Ruth Rendell
10 posts | 11 read | 11 to read
A spectacularly compelling story of blackmail, murders both accidental and opportunistic, and of one lifes fateful unraveling from Ruth Rendellone of the most remarkable novelists of her generation (People)writing at her most acute and mesmerizing. When his father dies, Carl Martin inherits a house in an increasingly rich and trendy London neighborhood. Carl needs cash, however, so he rents the upstairs room and kitchen to the first person he interviews, Dermot McKinnon. That was colossal mistake number one. Mistake number two was keeping his fathers bizarre collection of homeopathic cures that he found in the medicine cabinet, including a stash of controversial diet pills. Mistake number three was selling fifty of those diet pills to a friend, who is then found dead. Dermot seizes a nefarious opportunity and begins to blackmail Carl, refusing to pay rent, and creepily invading Carls space. Ingeniously weaving together two storylines that finally merge in one shocking turn, Ruth Rendell describes one mans spiral into darknessand murderas he falls victim to a diabolical foe he cannot escape. This is masterful storytelling that gets under your skin, brilliant psychological suspense from Ruth Rendell. No one surpasses Ruth Rendell when it comes to stories of obsession, instability, and malignant coincidence (Stephen King).

Mehso-so

How about that? Finished another book which triggered me early on, causing a long hiatus in reading it. Themes of delusion and paranoia, abuse of situations and relationships (emotional), spiraling---Kafkaesque and Hitchcockian in tension. It did have odd Singin' in the Rain contrasts in characterization. This genre probably stresses me out so I don't think I could adequately judge its character properly, or recs. Prob the type in genre for me.

I expected to like this book a lot. I‘ve been hearing for years about how wonderful Ruth Rendell novels are. Honestly, it was just okay. I think I couldn‘t get past the fat-shaming in the early part of the book (slender actress gains 14 pounds and is constantly referred to as SO FAT until she drops out of the story. Really?). The characters were unpleasant in general. Did not finish.

#authorilove #17booklove

Here's her first, and her last. There's something like 80 in between. If you have any love of mysteries, British detectives, or the darkness sometimes found in the human heart, get your hands on any book by her. You won't be disappointed.

LeahBergen I love Rendell. 💗 8y
Sweettartlaura @LeahBergen She was the best😍. Her last couple weren't her sharpest. But that can be forgiven of an 80 year old woman who has 70+ amazing books📚 8y
AmyG Everyone...READ HER if you haven't and you love mysteries. I spent a summer in the early 90's reading every book I could find of hers....going from library to library. She WAS the BEST. 8y

Not the best Ruth Rendell psychological mystery I have read although this one definitely shows the mastery she had creating fascinating but thoroughly unlikeable and rather creepy characters.

Pickpick

Quite tense story with a good psychological profile of the main character which falling down deeper and deeper with the help of a few creepy people and the whole story revolves around blackmail. Nice, but above all a quick reading.

KVanRead Good to know! 8y
Simona @KVanRead It's not shocking or scary story, but it has a solid psychological description of persons and that creates tension, just as I remember from her early works. This is her last book. 8y

Liberty Have you ever heard the story of how she became a novelist? It may be my favorite author story ever. 😂 8y
Simona @Liberty No, I never heard it, but I suspect some bizarre story. I've googled but can't find it. 8y
KVanRead @Simona glad to hear that. I've always liked her psychological thrillers best, especially the ones written as Barbara Vine. 8y
Liberty @Simona She used to work as a newspaper reporter, covering town meetings. One night, she played hooky and wrote and submitted a fake report of the meeting, because they were always the same. Except it happened to be the night the speaker died in the middle of his speech. She was caught lying and fired, so she thought it was a good time to work on a novel. 😊 8y
Simona @Liberty Lol. I work in the media (not as a journalist) and I completely understand her. 😗 8y
Simona @KVanRead I haven't read those that are written as Vine, but I understand that are, supposed to be more brutal? 8y
[DELETED] 2232195534 I love her Barbara Vine books, especially Anna's Book (aka Asta's Book). My mystery group did a Ruth Rendell/Barbara Vine month in January. It was great hearing about what everyone read! 8y
KVanRead @Simona I don't honestly remember them being more brutal, just more psychological novels than straight up mysteries. My favorite is 8y
KVanRead @Simona the creepiest I've read were under Ruth Rendell 8y
KVanRead @kaysreadinglife Does Asta's Book partly take place in a nursing home? I'm trying to remember if I've read it or not, lol! 8y
[DELETED] 2232195534 @KVanRead No, I don't think so. Must be another one. 8y
KVanRead @kaysreadinglife ack! Okay thanks, guess they've all blended in my head😂 8y
Simona @KVanRead @kaysreadinglife Thanks for recommendations. I've added Barbara Vine in my unmanageable TBR pile. 🙂 8y
Godmotherx5 @Simona Have you read Elizabeth George? Are Ruth Rendell's books similar? Psychological thrillers interest me. 8y
Simona @Godmotherx5 Sorry, but I'm not familiar with her books.🤗 8y
Godmotherx5 @Simona No problem. My curious mind will just have to read to find out 😉 8y

KVanRead Curious to hear what you think... Love so many by her, but last one I read was really not great 8y
Simona @OSChamberlain I always thought that I am a non-competitive, but now I want this damn gold😂 8y
Simona @KVanRead I've read only her earlier works and short stories and I'm not familiar with recent books. 8y
