The Green Hat
The Green Hat | Kirsty Gunn, Michael Arlen
3 posts | 1 read | 1 reading | 4 to read
The Green Hat perfectly reflects the atmosphere of the 1920sthe post-war fashion for verbal smartness, youthful cynicism, and the spirit of rebellion of the "bright young things" of Mayfair. Iris Storm, femme fatale, races around London and Europe in her yellow Hispano-Suiza surrounded by romantic intrigue, but beneath the glamour she is destined to be a tragic heroine. A perfect synecdoche, in fact: as the hat is to the woman, so the words of the title are to an entire literary style. The success of the novel when it was first published in 1924 let to its adaptation for the screen, with Greta Garbo starring as Iris Storm.

#3Books I plan to read in Sept.

The Green Hat I should be able to read in its entirety. I will begin The Magic Mountain for a two-month buddy read, and I hope to finish The Book of Disquiet, which was an August BotM read.

Mehso-so

Another book on wealthy English people in the 1920s. However, Iris Storm is a remarkable heroine, and the climax is built up carefully and unexpected. #1001books #1001bookstoreadbeforeyoudie
