The new novel from the winner of the Commonwealth Writers Prize, The Hired Man is a taut, powerful novel of a small town and its dark wartime secrets, unwittingly brought into the light by a family of outsiders. Aminatta Forna has established herself as one of our most perceptive and uncompromising chroniclers of war and the way it reverberates, sometimes imperceptibly, in the daily lives of those touched by it. With The Hired Man, she has delivered a tale of a Croatian village after the War of Independence, and a family of newcomers who expose its secrets. Duro is off on a mornings hunt when he sees something one rarely does in Gost: a strange car. Later that day, he overhears its occupants, a British woman, Laura, and her two children, who have taken up residence in a house Duro knows well. He offers his assistance getting their water working again, and soon he is at the house every day, helping get it ready as their summer cottage, and serving as Lauras trusted confidant. But the other residents of Gost are not as pleased to have the interlopers, and as Duro and Lauras daughter Grace uncover and begin to restore a mosaic in the front that has been plastered over, Duro must be increasingly creative to shield the family from the towns hostility, and his own past with the houses former occupants. As the inhabitants of Gost go about their days, working, striving to better themselves and their town, and arguing, the towns volatile truths whisper ever louder. A masterpiece of storytelling haunted by lost love and a restrained menace, this novel recalls Disgrace by J.M. Coetzee and Anils Ghost by Michael Ondaatje. The Hired Man confirms Aminatta Forna as one of our most important writers.

“I guessed that Laura was one of those people who preferred the music of a lie to the discordance of truth.” When a British family buys an abandoned house in the Croatian countryside in 2007, secrets long suppressed are drawn into the light. The taut prose, vivid characters & superb pacing make a gripping read in this story about the repercussions of civil war.

…a waft of his odour, which no amount of cologne will disguise: sweat & cooked meats. Fabjan‘s fingers are swollen & red. A wedding ring cuts into the flesh of his third finger, like a corset on an obese woman. His lips are virgin pink & shine with saliva. A family of hairs peeps from his nostrils & ears, while a crowd of hairs seems to strain upwards out of his open collar, as if they‘re trying to catch a glimpse of their upstairs cousins.

Fabjan had hired a new girl for the summer, who smiled at all the customers, which here is as disconcerting as if she walked through the streets singing.

Better mind your own business, chief, says my father (in those days he always called me chief). He gave me a shove. Don‘t forget, chief, never ask a question you don‘t have to, that way you‘ll live a lot longer.

I liked this book better than The Memory of Love but not as much as Happiness. At times I felt it was slow going, yet it somehow made me a bit anxious wanting to know how it turns out. In the end, we don't know how it turns out, only that life goes on and it can never be as it was before. Perhaps a poignant reminder during this time of a pandemic?

This is an exceptional book that examines the psychology of war and of memory and forgetting. It is beautiful, while also keeping you on the edge of your seat. Highly recommend!

I was 16 when Serbia was involved in a civil war so I don't remember much about it. I remember the mass graves and genocide from the news. After reading this book, I still don't know what cultures were involved. Duro's past and his feud with neighbors is intriguing. I'm sort of ashamed that I don't know this history of former Yugoslavia. I remember reading Zlata's Diary. Can anyone recommend others from this time period - fiction or nonfiction?

Purpleness This one is pretty good; I read it for Croatia last year in the #passportlitsy challenge (edited) 5y
Purpleness This one is also good; it‘s very poetic, and touches on the history in a more removed way. 5y
Butterfinger Thank you @Purpleness - I read The Hired Man for the #AroundtheWorld2019 challenge. I think taleaway.com is promoting it. I can't remember where I got my list of countries. I can't wait to read both of your suggestions. 5y

Maria514626 @Butterfinger The tagged book is excellent. (edited) 5y
SockieLady I don't know if you're still looking for suggestions, but The War Reporter by Martin Fletcher was an excellent book on the subject and is based on some of the actual military figures who took part in the war/genocide. 4y
Butterfinger I will certainly add this. Thank you @SockieLady 4y
BookNerdMama 'The Cellist of Sarajevo' by Steven Galloway. 'Hello to All That' by John Falk is nonfiction, and is EXCELLENT. 4y

Set in the former Yugoslavia, this book explores the feelings still simmering there.
