Pickpick

My last read for #AroundtheWorld2019. It reminded me of my own grandfather's stories. The grandfather's past shapes his and his granddaughter's futures. Culture, customs, wars, and stories are important and were beautiful to read.

#Booked2020 Millennial author
#PopSugar20 book I meant to read in 19
I'm going to loosely categorize this for #jennyis30 - cats @jenniferw88 Description and stories of the tiger were threaded through the whole book.

jenniferw88 Works for me - they're just big 🐱! Lol! 😂🐯❤ 4y

The Hired Man | Aminatta Forna
Pickpick

I was 16 when Serbia was involved in a civil war so I don't remember much about it. I remember the mass graves and genocide from the news. After reading this book, I still don't know what cultures were involved. Duro's past and his feud with neighbors is intriguing. I'm sort of ashamed that I don't know this history of former Yugoslavia. I remember reading Zlata's Diary. Can anyone recommend others from this time period - fiction or nonfiction?

Purpleness This one is pretty good; I read it for Croatia last year in the #passportlitsy challenge (edited) 5y
Purpleness This one is also good; it‘s very poetic, and touches on the history in a more removed way. 5y
Butterfinger Thank you @Purpleness - I read The Hired Man for the #AroundtheWorld2019 challenge. I think taleaway.com is promoting it. I can't remember where I got my list of countries. I can't wait to read both of your suggestions. 5y

Purpleness You‘re welcome! Hope you enjoy them. 5y
Maria514626 @Butterfinger The tagged book is excellent. (edited) 5y
SockieLady I don't know if you're still looking for suggestions, but The War Reporter by Martin Fletcher was an excellent book on the subject and is based on some of the actual military figures who took part in the war/genocide. 4y
Butterfinger I will certainly add this. Thank you @SockieLady 4y
BookNerdMama 'The Cellist of Sarajevo' by Steven Galloway. 'Hello to All That' by John Falk is nonfiction, and is EXCELLENT. 4y
