The Poetry of Impermanence, Mindfulness, and Joy
The Poetry of Impermanence, Mindfulness, and Joy | John Brehm
7 posts | 2 read | 7 to read
Over 125 poetic companions, from Basho to Billy Collins, Saigyo to Shakespeare. The poems expertly gathered here offer all that one might hope for in spiritual companionship: wisdom, compassion, peacefulness, good humor, and the ability to both absorb and express the deepest human emotions of grief and joy. The book includes a short essay on Mindful Reading and a meditation on sound from editor John Brehmhelping readers approach the poems from an experiential, non-analytical perspective and enter into the mindful reading of poetry as a kind of meditation. The Poetry of Impermanence, Mindfulness, and Joy offers a wide-ranging collection of 129 ancient and modern poems unlike any other anthology on bookshelves today. It uniquely places Buddhist poets like Han Shan, Tu Fu, Saigyo, Ryokan, Basho, Issa, and others alongside modern Western poets one would not expect to find in such a collectionpoets like Wallace Stevens, Robert Frost, Elizabeth Bishop, William Stafford, Denise Levertov, Jack Gilbert, Ellen Bass, Billy Collins, and more. What these poems have in common, no matter whether they are explicitly Buddhist, is that all reflect the essential truths the Buddha articulated 2,500 years ago. The book provides an important poetic complement to the many prose books on mindfulness practicethe poems here both reflect and embody the dharma in ways that cant be matched by other modes of writing. Its unique features include an introduction that discusses the themes of impermanence, mindfulness, and joy and explores the relationship between them. Biographical notes place the poets in historical context and offer quotes and anecdotes to help readers learn about the poets lives.

So much for my book buying ban. 😂

I lent my copy of Station Eleven over a year ago and so the buy one get one 50% off was too tempting to resist.

Then I found the tagged at a local indie bookstore. Went in to buy a gift and couldn‘t resist. ❤️📚

Bielzebubby Station Eleven really grabbed my attention last time I was in B&N. I take you buying a replacement copy as an endorsement! 5y
wanderinglynn @Bielzebubby Oh I loved the story! That‘s why I lent it out. 5y
Chrissyreadit I just looked up the tagged book ! Did you like it? 3y
wanderinglynn @Chrissyreadit yes! I haven‘t read all the poems, but what I have read, I‘ve enjoyed. 3y

Solid collection of poems. Perfect accompaniment for outdoor sunset reading while the wind casually guided its requested selections. 😎

Reading some poetry while waiting for midnight and the start of #24in28. This one speaks to me, as I often think of family members who have passed, and my age now in relation to theirs at the time. #LitsyPoetry365

Found this little book of poetry on the "weird and wonderful" shelf at the bookstore this morning. It is an anthology of poems for mindful reading. It is Buddhist in nature, but it would appeal to anyone wanting to read poetry for the experience rather than just the meaning. I'll be sharing some of these for #LitsyPoetry365.

Lcsmcat ❤️ the cover! 7y
rubyslippersreads Lovely photo! 😍🐘 7y
SharonGoforth @Lcsmcat Isn't that cover just stunning?! I had to pick it up when I saw it, then realized it was poetry, and then the whole mindfulness aspect of it-I had to bring it home! 7y
