I remain pensive after the last book that I read so I spent the evening with the poetry of Mary Oliver. #LitsyPoetry365

The Works: Poems Selected from Five Decades | Kathryn Starbuck, George Starbuck, Elizabeth A. Meese

How cool it would be that in every new day, in every fresh morning, we treasured each second of time as an opportunity to receive one another as a most precious gift?

I treasure every instruction that encourages existence. Life is a challenge, but do not fear living. This urging is from the Harlem Renaissance poet, Countee Cullen whose time on this planet was brief.
Enjoy National Poetry Month in April. Get to know a poet. Celebrate their work.

Lord Byron: The Major Works | George Gordon Lord Byron
post image

He might have been a libertine in his times. Maybe his poetry & prose work sprung from that as his words were erotic for those days. His reputation was mired in scandel. Yet his work was to later become influential & inspiring to Romantic Poets. He was more than a wordsmith. He was an intellect, an outspoken politician. He voiced words for the public good. He spoke of social reform & in favor of worker's rights. He is Lord Byron. #LitsyPoetry365

Nute @CarolynM @Ubookquitous @Cathythoughts I think that he is under appreciated at times. He is not as intently studied as others. There is a simple eloquence about his work. There is an unfading beauty. His work feels contemporary to me with its lyrical quality. Perhaps his body of work is overshadowed by the largeness of his life because most references to him are about him and not his poetry. I love this poem and so many more of his collection.💕 (edited) 6y
CarolynM I think his popularity weighs against him in critical circles. I loved his poems about aging when I first read them as a teenager, and still do now that I'm much older than he was complaining of! "And now at thirty years my hair is grey, I wonder what it will be like at forty..." " Tis time this heart should be unmoved since others it hath ceased to move..." 6y
Nute @CarolynM Conversation over tea with you would be the best. The many things we could discuss...💜💜💜💜 6y
CarolynM What a lovely suggestion. Maybe one day.. (edited) 6y

We lost an extraordinary soul when the world lost Maya Angelou, but she left us a legacy, a body of work that is unforgettable. I have no favorite by her, because so much is well-liked. So many of her words and thoughts are loved.
She will be forever remembered. And now she is forever free!

At tmes a poem that I fell in love with in childhood will suddenly come back to me. My favorite stanza:
Of those so close beside me, which are you?
God bless the Ground! I shall walk softly there,
And learn by going where I have to go.
An introspective look at the process of living, at the gain of insight, at the increase in consciousness & the acknowledgement that we flourish & fade in the same second.

Love: distraction, obsession and possession. I swear it's an addiction. A lovely addiction. Does that explain the title?

I stumbled across this collection of poems walking towards the kids section at Barnes & Nobles.
I‘m pretty sure I‘m going to love the poems but it‘s part two — side B — that sold this for me.
