Austin Returns with a Multi-Generational Historical Novel Geesje de Jonge crossed the ocean at age seventeen with her parents and a small group of immigrants from the Netherlands to settle in the Michigan wilderness. Fifty years later, in 1897, she's asked to write a memoir of her early experiences as the town celebrates its anniversary. Reluctant at first, she soon uncovers memories and emotions hidden all these years, including the story of her one true love. At the nearby Hotel Ottawa Resort on the shore of Lake Michigan, twenty-three-year-old Anna Nicholson is trying to ease the pain of a broken engagement to a wealthy Chicago banker. But her time of introspection is disturbed after a violent storm aboard a steamship stirs up memories of a childhood nightmare. As more memories and dreams surface, Anna begins to question who she is and whether she wants to return to her wealthy life in Chicago. When she befriends a young seminary student who is working at the hotel for the summer, she finds herself asking him all the questions that have been troubling her. Neither Geesje nor Anna, who are different in every possible way, can foresee the life-altering surprises awaiting them before the summer ends.

This is how Christian fiction should be! A journey through someone's real faith life, complete with difficulties and doubts, combined with two compelling storylines. And even better, it takes place in my home state of Michigan. This was a wonderful read, and the sequel was just released in October. I put a hold on the sequel at my library the minute I closed the cover of this one!

thereadingowlvina I read God and Kings of The Chronicles Of The Kings Series and loved it! She's one of my favourite Christian authors besides Kristy Cambron 😁 6y
smilingshelves @thereadingowlvina I loved her Chronicles of the Kings series, too! I'm not familiar with Kristy Cambron's books. I'll have to check her out! 6y

Blessed to have some of the best authors in the world right here in West Michigan! Herrick District Librarie's author series with Lynn Austin this evening. Lynn spoke on her book Waves of Mercy and the upcoming sequel, Legacy of Mercy. When is a fabulous speaker as well as a talented author! She graciously signed some of my growing collection that will keep me busy until the new release.

BookaholicNatty Ahhhhhmazing!!!! I have had Gods and Kings sitting on my shelf for over a year now and really need to get to reading that series!!!!!! I may just have to find it tomorrow and pull it off my shelf! 6y
TheHeartlandBookFairy @BookaholicNatty I think that was the 1st book she had published! She tells a fun story about it almost getting published & being sent back to her house in a large garbage bag with her address on it. Then giving up & eventually submitting it to a different publisher and finally getting word it would be published when she comes home from the grocery store to find that her kids have decorated the house with banners after they took the phone call! 6y
smilingshelves I love every one of Lynn Austin's books that I've read! @BookaholicNatty The Gods and Kings series was the first of hers I read, and they are so good! 6y

Mehso-so

I usually adore Lynn Austin's books, and while this had its good moments, I'm left with mixed feelings. It was fascinating to learn more about the Dutch people who traveled to Michigan, searching for religious freedoms they couldn't find in the Netherlands. My issue is with the heavy-handed "preaching" throughout the book. It became excessive and in my opinion, the characters did not respond to the many tragedies in their lives in a realistic way.

JenlovesJT47 Overall, I would give this ⭐️⭐️⭐️The main character went through so much tragedy in her life that it actually became quite depressing. I hear she is writing a sequel to this about the secondary main character, and I probably will read it to find out what happens to her, as the end of the book was not very satisfying. #historicalfiction 7y

I'm so excited to have met Lynn Austin this evening at our local public library! We are so lucky to have such a talented author living in our hometown. And she is just as good a speaker as she is an author! My comment this evening was that I am very curious as to what happens to Anna after this book and would she ever consider writing a sequel? The answer. . She is currently at work on the sequel to waves of mercy! Happy, happy!!! ♥️📖📚😊😁

JenlovesJT47 So awesome! I'm about halfway through and really enjoying it. She has so many great books! 7y
