The Hanover Square Affair
The Hanover Square Affair | Jennifer Ashley, Ashley Gardner
5 posts | 9 read | 15 to read
Cavalry captain Gabriel Lacey returns to Regency London from the Napoleonic wars, burned out, fighting melancholia, his career ended. His interest is piqued when he learns of a missing girl, possibly kidnapped by a prominent member of Parliament. Lacey's search for the girl leads to the discovery of murder, corruption, and dealings with a leader of the underworld. At the same time, he struggles with his own transition from a soldier's life to the civilian world, redefining his role with his former commanding officer, and making new friends--from the top of society to the street girls of Covent Garden. Book 1 of the Captain Lacey Regency Mysteries.

Regency mystery, 1st in Captain Lacey series. I enjoy another series by this author - Below Stairs/Kat Holloway - written under another pen name, but wasn't sure what to expect from this one. I really liked it and will likely continue the series, which has nearly 20 books in it. My TBR just grows exponentially!

This is the look I am giving this book. Too many historical slips, too much purple prose, 24% DNF. I need to find a better series of #regencyromance for comfort!
Suggestions?

Laughterhp I love anything written by Sarah MacLean and Courtney Milan. My favorite series is The Rules of Scoundrels by Sarah MacLean. 4y
MargaretPinardAuthor I‘ve been wanting to try Courtney Milan! I keep thinking I‘ll chance upon my first book of here, but it‘s impossible during quarantine. Good reminder—thank you @Laughterhp ! 4y

#Top20Series #20Series20Days #Day9

It‘s been a while since I read anything in this series, and I think I need to correct that. I‘ve read seven books in this series, about half. Captain Lacey, an injured veteran of the Napoleonic campaigns, is a fascinating character who finds himself solving mysteries. The more I think about it, the more I think I need to read the next book soon.

Andrew65 A good choice. 4y

#couldntputitdown I've gotten hooked on Ashley Gardner's Captain Lacey mysteries. Yes, I'm a sucker for historical mysteries, but these have great characters and interesting plot twists.

This a good, not great, Regency mystery. Captain Lacey is delightfully broken and the mystery was equally developed. Supporting characters need work and the ending felt rushed. However, I'm looking forward to the next in the series to see if improvements have been made.
