A-Z Great Modern Writers
A-Z Great Modern Writers | Andy Tuohy
9 posts | 1 read | 2 to read
Artist and graphic designer Andy Tuohy turns his hand to the world of literature, in this new instalment of the A-Z series. Rendered in his distinctive style, this new book features portraits of 52 key modern writers significant for their contribution to literature, with a whole host of names from across the world including Gabriel Garca Mrquez, Samuel Beckett, mile Zola, Jung Chang, Franz Kafka and Leo Tolstoy to name but a few. Each writer's entry will also have a summary of the essential things you need to know about them, why they are important in the field of literature, a list of their must-read books, and a surprising fact or two about them, as well as other images throughout such as of famous book covers and author photographs. A fun, easy guide to some of the best writers of modern times, this would be a great gift for an English Lit student, and anyone who just loves literature.

I picked up the tagged book while looking for another book this evening. With the holidays only a couple months away, I'd be remiss if I didn't recommend it, as it is the perfect gift for readers of lit fiction. Brief, informative entries with great illustrations.

Great cover design, but what really caught my eye was the King Penguin logo at the top. Was Penguin Books known as King Penguin at one time?

vivastory Are you familiar with this @TheKidUpstairs ? 2y
vivastory @LeahBergen That IS interesting! Thanks for the info. What is even more fascinating is that it appears that Labyrinths did not appear as an actual King Penguin edition. From what I can find, the first English edition was pub by New Directions. There was an edition pub by Penguin but for some reason there are images floating around online w/ the King Penguin logo at the top, although it seems like it wouldn't have been pub in that line. 2y

LeahBergen How strange! 2y
Bookwomble @vivastory @LeahBergen The Wikipedia page for Penguin Imprints includes this about King Penguin: "The King Penguin imprint was briefly revived in 1981 for a series of contemporary works, chiefly fiction." ?️‍♂️ 2y
LeahBergen @Bookwomble Nice detective work! 👍 2y
vivastory @Bookwomble Excellent literary detection! Now I'm tempted to look through my Penguin coffee table book to see if there's info in there 🐧 2y

Graham Greene. I thought of him recently while watching the excellent Baby Driver. The Queen song "Brighton Rock" is also the title of Greene's wonderful book.

saresmoore I need to see Baby Driver ASAP. 7y
vivastory @saresmoore I'd make a real effort. It's definitely an experience better had in the theater 7y
