"Not Sergeant Hakeswill," Garrard said, then spat a mix of dust and spittle. . . . "Hakeswill was spawned of the devil." Richard SharpeSoldier, hero, roguethe man you always want on your side. Born in poverty, he joined the army to escape jail and climbed the ranks by sheer brutal courage. He knows no other family than the regiment of the 95th Rifles, whose green jacket he proudly wears.

My first Sharpe, also first in the series chronologically (although not the first one written).
Sharpe, a British soldier in India, goes undercover to save an officer in Seringapatam and to get info on how/where to best attack the city.
It's a fast-paced and somewhat violent piece of historical fiction, with believable characters, lots of interesting historical details, twists and turns. ⬇️

eeclayton I'll be sure to check out the other books in the Sharpe series, there are plenty of them 😁 4y
KVanRead I‘ve never read them but I loved the tv adaptations with Sean Bean 4y
eeclayton @KVanRead I heard Cornwell say in a podcast that Bean was the perfect Sharpe. 4y
KVanRead He is fabulous 4y

This was a reread for me but it still holds up. This is the first book in the series chronologically. It's an exciting easy read.
