Jasmine Toguchi, Mochi Queen
Jasmine Toguchi, Mochi Queen | Debbi Michiko Florence
5 posts | 5 read | 1 to read
The first book in a new chapter book series featuring a spunky Japanese-American heroine! Eight-year-old Jasmine Toguchi is a flamingo fan, tree climber, and top-notch mess-maker! She's also tired of her big sister, Sophie, always getting to do things first. For once, Jasmine wishes SHE could do something before Sophiesomething special, something different. The New Year approaches, and as the Toguchi family gathers in Los Angeles to celebrate, Jasmine is jealous that her sister gets to help roll mochi balls by hand with the women. Her mom says that Jasmine is still too young to join in, so she hatches a plan to help the men pound the mochi rice instead. Surely her sister has never done THAT before. But pounding mochi is traditionally reserved for boys. And the mochi hammer is heavier than it looks. Can Jasmine build her case and her mochi-making muscles in time for New Year's Day?

Really enjoyed this charming first fiction novel. Jasmine is a gem - she reminds me of my middle child - she knows her own mind and is determined to help the men in her family point mochi.

🎧 A beginning chapter book for K - 3.

Jasmine Toguchi is an 8 year old Japanese-American little girl determined to pound Mochi with the boys. She‘s overshadowed by her older sister & teased by a little boy (cousin). She‘s out to prove that she can swing the Mochi hammer with the big boys. She‘s one adorable determined little girl.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 👇🏻

Twainy The narrator has a clear, engaging, cute voice! At the end of the book there‘s a chapter with an easy microwave recipe for Mochi (without all of the hammering) and the narrator CLEARLY sounds out the Japanese words.

Twainy The audio would be a fun thing to listen to while your child is reading along with the book & at the end you can make the sweet treat together. It is just over an hour long. If you pre-read your child‘s books for appropriateness you could easily listen at 1.5 speed. I can‘t wait to get the hardcover! (I learned something too!)

Thank you NetGalley & OrangeSky Audio for the opportunity to read this book. Loved it!

Had an unexpected day off at my library today (a planned power outage to replace a utility pole) so I popped over to another county library location for some early chapter book inspiration. I‘m planning the reading lists for my #homeschoolbookclub groups this school year. Suggestions welcome, particularly ones with racially & ethnically diverse voices! #kidlit #weneeddiversebooks #chapterbooks

GirlNamedJesse I‘ve read several of these, but we looooove the King & Kayla books! Your reading list sounds awesome! 😊 5y
Tamra The Zoey & Sassafras‘s series is great! 5y
