I read this chapter book with my daughter and we both loved it. A young girl discovers magical creatures and uses the scientific methods to help heal them when they are sick. She‘s clever and determined and the book stresses the importance of thinking through your problems logically. I can‘t wait to read more of the series with my kiddo.

It‘s a baby dragon and a cat - that‘s all you need to know! But also great for readers getting into chapter fiction. Love the smart and compassionate character, Zoey.

BookNAround I just bought this one to give to my daughter‘s best friend for her 2nd grade classroom. She‘s a new teacher and it‘s a Title 1 school so I decided I needed to help her classroom library grow. 3y

Apparently I'm not allowed to read to the kids at bedtime anymore because it's Nina's job... according to her it's about a dragon who is sick, coughing fire. Its mommy has to text daddy to come home from work and theres a magic drill that fixes cars and makes you see your dreams? #raisingreaders

Jas16 That sound like a book I would absolutely read. 4y
CoverToCoverGirl Perhaps a future fantasy writer in the making! 🙂 4y

Dragons and marshmallows by Asia Citro is an adorable modern fantasy book that is on the sunshine state young readers list. This story is written about a girl who discovers magical animals come out to meet her in her backyard when they are injured. One day a dragon named marshmallow comes and is in need of her care. This story is a great choice for an independent read because it is a pleasurable book for children.

Haleysantucci The UDL principle used would be 6.1 because I would want them to have an appropriate goal in mind for finishing this book, one, of course, that is at their own pace. I would utilize the ESOL strategy number 9, first teaching students how to take notes and then allowing them to use their knowledge from my modeling when reading the book. 6y

LaGasseSam1996 This book looks like something students would really enjoy reading. The lesson plan you picked I think is a good one. I think any lesson plan that has students getting more involved and understanding the characters is a good thing. 6y
DrSpalding I am happy that you selected a book from the sunshine state young reader award list. 6y

Fabulous early chapter book (part of a series). Diverse, smart female lead character. Zoey uses the scientific method to figure out how to help the sick magical animals who come to her barn. There‘s a glossary at the end too.

HippieChickHomeschool We love this series at my house! 6y

Just started this one with my girl today.
Zoey and her cat Sassafras learn about her mother‘s childhood secret of helping magical creatures in her family‘s barn. As mom prepares to leave town for a week, Zoey prepares to take up the mantle. So far so good!

My 8yo told me I "HAD to read this" little chapter book she's reading, so I did. And I loved it! This has a sweet storyline with a modern feel, lots of solid, interesting science info which feels like a natural part of the narrative, a dash of magic, and a ton of heart. The illustrations are adorable, and the writing is just lovely. I'm honestly surprised I, as an adult, felt so engaged reading a chapter book. ?

👧🏾👦🏾Black kids don‘t just want to read about Harriet Tubman all the time. AMEN Not only that, they shouldn‘t be relegated to the sidekick character. Kids want to read about kids doing kid things that look like them. That‘s not rocket science. 🚀 I‘ve been ranting about this to myself and husband for years now.

I picked up the first book in the series because the cover was so cute. Then I started reading it to my 5 year old and I knew this was something special by the way her eyes lit up. Zoey is a girl scientist who discovers she lives next to a forest full of magical creatures! We were only halfway through the first one when I went out and bought the other two. I hope there will be more! #raisingreaders #weneeddiversebooks

I enjoyed this quick read, I liked the characters and the magical elements of the story but the world is a bit flimsy. I was left with so many questions I would have a hard time recommending it to a kid I cared about.

Bette That's too bad, our copy just came in to the library. The cover looks so inviting. 8y

We loved this first ARC book in the Zoey series. My daughter could never stop at one chapter! Perfect for any curious young child who loves animals. A HUGE bonus that the main character is a brown girl! As soon as we closed the last page, we were speculating about the next magical creature and when my daughter saw the next two books on the back cover she cried, "Order more, order more!" We'll definitely keep reading Zoey.
