Good book about prayer, confession, and study as those things work against the selfish desire to be relevant, popular, and powerful. Second time I have read this short book and I will have to read it again someday as I still have much to learn.

I‘ve read this book before as assigned reading in college, but chose to speed read through it as I had no interest in Christian leadership. So I was glad when someone in our book group chose it as our next book - reading through it slowly had me gain much more, and helped me realize that “Christian leadership” moves well beyond the realm of pastors & church elders.
“The request to reflect on Christian leadership in the new century has created quite a bit of anxiety in me.”

It is my goal to read everything Henri J.M. Nouwen has ever wrote. This is #3 of many. My favorite take away is this, “Christian leaders cannot simply be persons who have well-informed opinions about the burning issues of our time. Their leadership must be rooted in the permanent, intimate relationship with the incarnate Word, Jesus, and they need to find there the source for their words, advice, and guidance.”
This slim little book is one of the most beautiful and true things I've read in a long time. Nouwen's humble, gentle, and joyful writing defies words. I'll be thinking about this one for a very long time.
