No Wind of Blame
No Wind of Blame | Georgette Heyer
4 posts | 5 read | 6 to read
The superlatively analytical Inspector Hemingway is confronted by a murder that seems impossible?no one was near the murder weapon at the time the shot was fired. Everyone on the scene seems to have a motive, not to mention the wherewithal to commit murder, and alibis that simply don't hold up. The inspector is sorely tried by a wide variety of suspects, including the neglected widow, the neighbor who's in love with her, her resentful daughter, and a patently phony Russian prince preying on the widow's emotional vulnerability and social aspirations. And then there's the blackmail plot that may?or may not?be at the heart of the case? PRAISE FOR GEORGETTE HEYER: "Our Georgette Heyer display of the Sourcebooks reprints has been a huge success, not only to those early fans like myself, but to many new readers who appreciate her style and wit." Nancy Olson, Quail Ridge Books, Raleigh, NC "Reading Georgette Heyer is the next best thing to reading Jane Austen." Publishers Weekly "Wonderful characters, elegant, witty writing, perfect period detail, and rapturously romantic. Georgette Heyer achieves what the rest of us only aspire to." Katie Fforde

#12Booksof2022 #November

I discovered Georgette Heyer‘s mystery novels this year. This is my favourite so far and my favourite read in November.

Andrew65 These are excellent books. 1y
dabbe The cover just screams noir to me. Are these books detective noir? 1y
CarolynM @dabbe I wouldn‘t call them noir. More English Golden Age 1y
dabbe @CarolynM Even better! 1y

Playing catch up with some reviews.

This might be my favourite Georgette Heyer mystery so far. Wonderful female characters in this one and some ingenious misdirection in the plot.

mabell I love this one too! Vicky is too much 🤣 @robinb This one should be moved up on the list! I forgot to mention it, but it is really one of the best 😄 1y

robinb @CarolynM thanks!! If it‘s Heyer, I‘m sure I will! 👍 1y
Blueberry My next bookclub read is The Tollgate by this author. I've never read her. 1y
CarolynM @Blueberry Is that one of the romances or the mysteries? I tried one of her romances once but couldn‘t get into it. I‘ve only recently discovered the mysteries. I like them so much I think I might need to try the romances again🙂 (edited) 1y
CarolynM @Blueberry I just looked it up - it sounds like a mash-up of both. Fun! (edited) 1y
Cedar_and_Grapefruit Love this! 1y

A fun mystery that resembles a 3-ring circus due to the competing dramatic personalities. The murder victim will not be missed, and just about everyone has a motive, so who actually committed the murder?

As a side note, Mary was entirely too good, the epitome of respectability and propriety. I was much more in sympathy with impulsive Vicky, and I kept hearing in my head - "Oh Rose don't be so stuck up" in Agnes' voice from Meet Me in St. Louis.

MaureenMc Omg, you referenced one of my all-time favorite movies! 🙌 6y
mabell @MaureenMc My sister's husband's name is Joe. My mom loves saying "Hello Joe" like grandpa ? 6y
MaureenMc @mabell That‘s awesome! 😄 6y
Gissy Love that cover 6y
