We're in Ely as our son recently moved here and we've come to visit. Mrs B. has booked us into a lovely B&B above a tea shop, which is full of little book nooks! 😍📚
Coffee and cake upon arrival (I had vegan lemon and lavender, Mrs. B had mocha), and a shufty at the shelves.
We had a stroll up the high street and I popped my head into a perfect Toppings and Co. bookshop - proper visit tomorrow, and a tour for any others I might find 😊

TrishB Sounds lovely ♥️ 1d
Ruthiella Perfection! 😊 1d
BarbaraJean I just replied to your comment re: my bookshop post from years ago, and find that you have already located said bookshop 😊 Enjoy your proper visit there tomorrow and be sure to go right up to the top for the cathedral views! 1d

Bookwomble @BarbaraJean I replied on that earlier post, too ? I'll be sure to go upstairs at Toppings ("Upstairs at Toppings" sounds like a cozy crime novel! ?) 1d

While I was in England, I got to visit Ely—the little cathedral town where I lived from age 3 to age 9. And while I was there, I found the bookstore I was hoping to find—with this lovely cathedral view! The picture on the left is one I came across online, months ago. It was in one of those lists with pictures of gorgeous bookshops, and I said, “Wait—I know that cathedral!!” The pics on the right are ones I took last week. 😍

Bookwomble I've just arrived in Ely, and will be exploring tomorrow. Do you recall the name of this bookshop, Barbara? I will no doubt hunt it down if it still exists, but a clue would not go amiss 😊 1d
BarbaraJean @Bookwomble Yes! It‘s Topping and Co. Booksellers—I don‘t know the address, but it‘s on the High Street just down from the Market Square, on the left if you‘re walking down toward the river. I‘m so jealous—enjoy your time in Ely! In addition to the cathedral and the river, I‘d also recommend the Peacocks Tearoom, and my husband would highly recommend a meal at the Prince Albert pub (he raves about it every time we talk about Ely!) (edited) 1d
Bookwomble @BarbaraJean Thank you 😊 I'll make sure to go upstairs at Toppings tomorrow, as you suggest in your other post. Not only have we had coffee and cake at Peacock's, we're staying here in one of their B&B suites 😁 I'll hunt out the Prince Albert pub, thanks 🍻 1d
BarbaraJean @Bookwomble Oh, fantastic that you're staying there at Peacock's! Just down the street from my childhood home. I lived at 13 and 15 Waterside from age 3 to age 6 😁 Enjoy your time in Ely! 1d

Ely, Cambridgeshire, England isn‘t my current city, but I lived there for six years of my childhood. And Ely Cathedral, dating back to 1083, is a much better landmark than any in my current city! I was 6 or 7 years old when some beams in the cathedral ceiling were replaced. Local schoolchildren were invited to come sign the beams before they were installed, so my name is written on a beam in the ceiling of this cathedral. #landmarksofmycity

BarbaraJean The bottom pic is of me & my dad. We took so many family photos on that fence! 8y
DreesReads I've been there! My grandmother's grandfather was from Welches Dam--he went from being a child laborer there in the 1840s to owning a small farm in Illinois. My grandmother was born in his farmhouse, I have been in that house and met his youngest son, and the property is still in that branch of the family. He also brought his long duck hunting gun over. Not as useful in Illinois. We saw one in the museum in Welney--and learned it goes in a boat. 8y
Joanne1 Being an Australian the idea that you have built landmarks dating back that far blows my mind. 8y

JazzFeathers That's such a cool story! I visited Oxford years ago. Now l really need to visit Cambridge 😊 8y
Cinfhen So beautiful 8y
Clwojick Wow. It's so pretty 8y
BarbaraJean @AudreyMorris Oh, how fun! I remember Welney! @JazzFeathers Yes—Cambridge is beautiful! I remember it for things like music exams... but also for punting on the Cam! 8y
BarbaraJean @Joanne1 I had the reverse reaction the year my family moved back to California and I studied California history—it felt like there was so little history to study! Of course, when it‘s studied primarily from the colonizers onward... 🙄 8y
Joanne1 @BarbaraJean the same experience can happen here in Australia. I was only taught history from when the first European explorers "discovered" and "settled" Australia. Nothing of the 60,000 years of indigenous history. Thankfully a lot has changed since then. 8y
