Doug is a robot. His parents want him to be smart, so each morning they plug him in and start the information download. After a morning spent learning facts about the city, Doug suspects he could learn even more about the city by going outside and exploring it. And so Doug . . . unplugs. What follows is an exciting day of adventure and discovery. Doug learns amazing things by doing and seeing and touching and listeningand above all, by interacting with a new friend. Dan Yaccarino's funny story of robot rebellion is a great reminder that sometimes the best way to learn about the world is to go out and be in it.

4⭐️ This was an unexpected treat. Doug is a robot and everyday his parents plug him in to download his lessons. But when a pigeon flies by Doug wonders if he might learn more by unplugging and exploring the city. Lots of fun, and simple, colorful illustrations.

Doug Unplugged is a SF by Dan Yaccarino about a robot, named Doug, who is plugged into a machine every morning in order to learn. One day he unplugs himself, to see the city he had previously learned about through a download, and discovers there are things that can only be learned from first-hand experience. It‘s a great RA to read to students to show the relationship between digital and physical learning.

AshleyAA A great book to introduce digital learning or to encourage students to go “screen free” for a while with different activities as provided in the link. The activities can meets UDL principles 2.5 and 3.2 relating to illustrating material through multiple media and highlighting big ideas/relationships alongside EL 46 and EL 49 which relates to using discovery activities in the classroom and give students pre-assignments when introducing new topics. 7y
KatherineBeckham This is a really cool idea for a story! Kids now are far too invested in their devices to look around them. I'm guilty of this as well. One time at a concert someone told me to put my phone down and enjoy the moment, and I actually did. I think this would be a great opportunity to take the kids outside and have them explore with no electronics around. 7y

DrSpalding Yes! UNPLUG. Your students will need to hear this message over and over again. This author is the same author as the book I shared last week, I Am a Story! Great post. 7y
KarinaGuillen Ooo his sounds like a great book. These days it‘s nearly impossible to get students away from technology. This story helps children understand that there is more to life than what is on the screen! Can‘t wait to read! 7y
MorganH This sounds like a fantastic book with a great lesson to students about getting off technology to experience the real world! I love it! 7y
Arestrepo11 This sounds like a great book! I will definitely check it out! It is so important that we learn to disconnect. 7y
