I think I finally found my storytelling book!! 🤩

Two Bobbies by Kirby Larson and Mary Nethery, illustrated by Jean Cassels is a NF picture book that shares the story of Bobbi the dog and Bob Cat, who both have no tails, and their attempt at survival after Hurricane Katrina (Category 3) hit their hometown of New Orleans. This book would make a great RA to share with your class about true friendship.

National Geographic Kids: Penguins! By Anne Schreiber is a NF book that provides factual information about penguins (my favorite animal!) , like where they live and what they eat. I believe it would work best as a SR, especially when introducing students to expository text as teacher can model how to identify and when to use NF text features such as the table of content, headers, and the glossary to maximize comprehension.

Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson, illustrated by Axel Scheffler is a F picture book about a kind witch who makes a few friends every time she drops one of her things as she‘s flying on her broom. She finds room on her broom for all her new friends who come to her rescue when a situation arises at the end. This book could be a RA, but I think it would make a fun DR.

Not Quite Narwhal, by Jessie Sima, is a F picture book about a unicorn, named Kelp, that thinks he is a narwhal, until one day he finds himself on land and discovers he is not a narwhal at all. I made many connections to Jumpstart‘s Read for the Record book Quackers, as the main characters experience the same confusion. This book would make a great RA for students to learn about friendship.

Henry‘s Freedom Box by Ellen Levine, illustrated by Kadir Nelson, is a HF, Caldecott winning, picture book about a young enslaved boy (great for RA or SR). Henry lived his life without much complain, although it wasn‘t the life he would‘ve chosen; until the day his family was sold at the slave market. Knowing he was never to see his family again, Henry sets up a plan to finally be as free as the birds in the trees.

After The Fall, a F picture book, by Dan Santat is the story of the well-known Humpty Dumpty, the struggles he faced after his great fall, and how he got back up again. After reading, this book immediately made it to my list of favorites! This heartbreaking, inspirational picture book makes a great RA to teach students that failure happens to everyone, but when they overcome them, they can and will reach new heights.

The Lion and the Mouse by Jerry Pinkney is a TL book, great for S or RT, that tells of a prideful lion who spares a seemingly insignificant little mouse. However, when lion gets stuck in a hunters trap, the mouse comes to his rescue and frees him. This Caldecott award winner is great to show students that everyone needs help sometimes, and that everybody has a purpose, even the smallest of living creatures.

Clementine by Sara Pennypacker, illustrated by Marla Frazee, is a RF novel that follows a quirky girl who always seems to be getting into trouble, even though she isn‘t trying. She‘s a humorous girl, with a kind heart, who always seems to have an idea in her head, ideas that don‘t always seem to go as planned. The Boston Globe Horn Book Honor winner makes a great book for IR or LC as students genuinely connect with Clementine.

The Story of Ruby Bridges by Robert Coles, illustrated by George Ford,is a NF/B that tells of Ruby Bridges, a courageous young girl who made history as the first African American child to attend an all-white school in New Orleans. A story of faith and hope, it‘s a great resource to incorporate when teaching about the civil rights movement. It would make a great LC book, as each group can read about a different civil rights hero.

What Do You Do With An Idea? by Kobi Yamada, illustrated by Mae Besom is a F book about a child who happens to have an idea and doesn‘t know what to do with it out of fear of the unknown. He didn‘t know how people would react and didn‘t have the confidence to find out, but that changes when he gets attached. An Independent Publisher Book Award winner, it makes an exceptional book for IR, or RA. One of my favorite books!!

Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons by Eric Litwin, illustrated by James Dean makes a great book for CR, or as a way to introduce the author/illustrator for an AS. It is a Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor book that will inspire students to follow along to Pete‘s groovy button song and mimic animated reading, as the teacher should model when his buttons can‘t seem stop popping off.

A Poem for A Pickle is a P book filled with silly poems by Eve Merriam, illustrated by Sheila Hamanaka. It would make a great resource to introduce students to poetry. Bursting with rhymes and repetition to hook young readers, and illustrations to aid students with comprehension. I believe it would work best for IR, but also for SR, especially if used to introduce poetry because teacher can model how to properly read poems.

Mango, Abuela, and Me, by Meg Medina/illustrated by Angela Dominguez, is a RF picture book about a young girl and her Spanish speaking grandmother who have much to say to each other, but no clue how to say it. Maybe Mango, a parrot, can be a solution to their communication barrier, Mango and a lot of practice. This Pura Belpré Honor book would make a wonderful RA or GR.

The Adventures of Beekle, by Dan Santat is a MF about an imaginary friend who goes a long time waiting to be imagined, when his time never arrives he decides to go on an adventure into the real world in search of his special friend. A Caldecott award winner, this book is great for RA or PR that touches on themes of friendship, patience, and courage.

The One and Only Ivan written by Katherine Applegate, illustrated by Patricia Castelao is a F novel about a Gorilla, named Ivan, who lives in a mall struggling to feel comfortable with his living arrangement. Confused about who he is and who he was meant to be. Until little Ruby comes along and brings light the truth they tried so hard to ignore, awakening Ivan‘s true self.

There‘s a Monster in Your Book, by Tom Fletcher, is a F picture book, a fun RA for young students. Readers are encouraged to physically interact with the book itself by completing strings of actions like tilting, shaking, and wiggling the book to try and get the adorable, mischievous, little monster out before he destroys all the pages!

Doug Unplugged is a SF by Dan Yaccarino about a robot, named Doug, who is plugged into a machine every morning in order to learn. One day he unplugs himself, to see the city he had previously learned about through a download, and discovers there are things that can only be learned from first-hand experience. It‘s a great RA to read to students to show the relationship between digital and physical learning.

Wonder, written by R.J. Palacio, is a RF novel that is guaranteed to take readers on an emotional rollercoaster. It follows August, a young boy with an extraordinary face, and his journey through a traditional school for the first time. A New York Times Best Seller and an E.B. White Read Aloud award winner it is a wonderful novel full of laughter and tears with a beautiful lesson for students; treat everyone with kindness.

Top and Bottoms by Janet Stevens is a humorous Caldecott award winner TL book following a tricky hare, who loves getting into trouble, and a lazy bear, who loves to sleep. Hare and Bear become business partners and decide to split the crops evenly, it‘s up to bear to chose which half he wants, tops or bottoms? However, things don‘t seem to go as planned for bear. Students will learn that hard work pays off!

El Deafo,by Cece Bell, is a autobiographical graphic novel following Cece the bunny, who just happens to be deaf.Growing up in a “hearing” world with a phonic ear strapped to her isn‘t easy.All she wants is one true friend; someone who sees her, not her deafness. Winner of the 2015 Newbery Award.A great LC book to use with the AB Teaching Guide to guide discussions.
