This F Caldecott honor book, written by Aaron Reynolds and illustrated by Peter Brown that would be perfect for a RA, especially around Halloween. The story is about Jasper Rabbit who loves carrots, especially the ones from Crackenhooper Field. He couldn‘t get enough of them, until they started following him. http://deannajump.com/creepy-carrots-read-aloud-lessons/

EricaG The link gives ideas on how to use this book for making predictions, cause and effect, story structure and more. One activity is to read up to certain spot, then stop and have the students write their predictions and then they can share with the class. This would align with UDL 8.3- foster collaboration and EL 44- focus on thinking skills: predict, categorize, etc. #UCFLAE3414F17 6y
KayleeC After reading the article on this book in class i have wanted to read it but haven‘t gotten the change. It‘s great that this story can be used to teach students different aspects of a story. 6y

Hoot | Carl Hiaasen
post image
Pickpick

Hoot, a RF Newbery honor book, written by Carl Hiaasen is a great book for LC or IR for upper elementary and middle school students. The book is about a boy who moves to Coconut Cove, FL and winds up trying to stop construction of a Pancake House to save burrowing owls. I think students would enjoy reading this story because it takes place in Florida!

EricaG After reading, the teacher can show the movie and have the students compare and contrast the book and the movie. This could align with UDL 3.2 highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships and EL 45- use Venn diagrams to compare and contrast activities. https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/picturing-stor... The link takes you to a scholastic lesson plan to use with the book. #UCFLAE3414F17 (edited) 6y

This SF novel by Ridley Pearson is a great book for LC or IR for upper elementary or middle school students. The story is about five kids who are turned into Disney host holograms and are the key to saving Disney World. I think students would really enjoy this book, especially because it takes place right here in Orlando! https://www.scribd.com/mobile/document/215408915/Kingdom-Keepers-Teacher-s-Guide

EricaG The link provides some different ideas of how to use this book in the classroom. One of them is to hold a mock trial. After reading, students would think of the “crimes” the villains committed. Then, they would hold the trial with the students acting as the villains, judge, prosecution, defense, and the jury. They would need to research judicial procedures first, and then plan their strategies. This would meet UDL 6.2 and EL 48. #UCFLAE3414F17 (edited) 6y
DrSpalding What a fantastic way to teach about the judicial system while using a quality piece of literature. Wonderful resource. 6y

Waiting | Kevin Henkes
post image
Pickpick

Waiting by Kevin Henkes is a Caldecott and Geisel honor book, and with it‘s beautiful illustrations this F PB would be perfect for SR with lower elementary students. It‘s about five animal friends sitting patiently on the windowsill, waiting and watching the world outside. This book could help teach young children about waiting patiently for the things you want. https://www.teachingbooks.net/media/pdf/HarperCollins/Waiting_2015.pdf

EricaG An activity from the link is to have students write about something they are waiting for and why they‘re waiting for it, and draw a picture of themselves waiting. Then, they can hang them on a window in the classroom and share with the class what they wrote about. For this, I chose UDL 8.3- foster collaboration and community and EL 16- integrate speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities. #UCFLAE3414F17 (edited) 6y

This is a NF PB by Duncan Tonatiuh, that has won a Sibert honor medal, a Pura Belpre award, and an Orbis Pictus honor, and would be great for a RA. The BFG, written by Roald Dahl with illustrations by Quentin Blake, is a great novel to use for LC or IR. The story follows Sophie, who was snatched by a giant, and their unlikely friendship. I highly recommend Roald Dahl's books because his stories suck you in and his use of silly words makes reading them even more fun! https://www.roalddahl.com/docs/BFGlessonplans_web_1467018727.pdf

EricaG The link takes you to the Roald Dahl website where there are lesson plans for all of his books. This HF Newbery Honor winner and first ever winner of the Scott O'Dell Award, written by Elizabeth George Speare, is a great book to use for LC or IR for upper elementary and middle school students. The idea for this book came from a factual story that the author discovered, about a young boy who was left alone for a summer in the wilderness of 18th-century Maine, and was befriended by a Native American boy and his grandfather.

EricaG The ending of the book leave the reader wondering what happens to the characters. This gives a great opportunity for students to write their own ending to the story on what they think happens after the book ends.

Mapping Penny's World by Loreen Leedy is a great low F picture book that is perfect for a RA. This book would be great to read before a lesson on maps. The Story of Ferdinand is a F book about a bull named Ferdinand, who would rather sit and smell flowers than fight, and would be perfect for a RA. Ferdinand's story can help teach students to be true to themselves, and that it's okay to be different. The book also uses some Spanish words which can be a great learning opportunity for all students to broaden their vocabulary. https://www.teachervision.com/story-ferdinand-activities
