The influence of Pushkin and Dostoyevsky is clear in Chekhov's only novel. Like Crime & Punishment the murder takes up very little space, this time towards the end rather than the beginning and the focus is on psychology and relationships. Nevertheless it's an interesting and unusual detective tale, drawing on Poe and Collins. This is a very early work but the features of his more famous works are present. It's a shame there were no more novels
