Manfish: A Story of Jacques Cousteau | Jennifer Berne
15 posts | 11 read | 2 to read
Before Jacques Cousteau became an internationally known oceanographer and champion of the seas, he was a curious little boy. In this lovely biography, poetic text and gorgeous paintings combine to create a portrait of Jacques Cousteau that is as magical as it is inspiring.

Great for teaching curiosity and exploration. Students could brainstorm inventions that help people experience new places or ideas.

I just found this in a classroom library and read it aloud to the 1st graders. My library is closed while I cover the class. No substitutes. It was fun explaining how I watched Jacques Cousteau on TV when I was their age. I forgot that he invented the aqualung. He was a household name! I need to get a copy of this for our library.

mandarchy I paused reading to explain that he had to make his own wet suit and flippers because you couldn't buy them at the store. One kiddo pointed out that Fred Meyer opened in 1925. And she implied that he could have bought them there. So then I had to explain how and when the superstore was invented. Could you imagine a 1925 Fred Meyer? Kids today have no idea! 1y

#BoundTogetherJune Day 18: I love everything about Man #Fish: from the typography to the overall layout and design, from the lyrical text to the luminous art that made me feel as I was breathing underwater. Jacques Cousteau was born in France. From the time that he was a little boy, he was already in love with the water. My review of this gorgeous picturebook biography: https://wp.me/pDlzr-8ye

This biography does a really good job in depicting the life of Jacques Cousteau. A famous oceanographer. The author even offers a not at the end of the book. A great read for children as the author tells the story of how this man‘s initial interests as a child become his reality!

Lrobertson In the classroom: RA. Showing the students the short video on youtube( https://youtu.be/9z08SD5iRuk ) before would give students some prior knowledge. Also, this video on youtube ( https://youtu.be/ryBhIJXiRlc) has footage from Jacques explorations. Using EL Strategy 28: Provides biographies of significant men and women from different countries. DrSpalding Your English learner strategy is spot on! This book would be an excellent read aloud during a science/ocean unit. He is fascinating. What an excellent idea to include videos to provide prior knowledge. Excellent post.❤️📚 5y

"Manfish" (B) written by Jennifer Berne and illustrated by Eric Puybaret is a nonfiction picture book telling the story of Jacques Cousteau and his contributions to marine biology. The pictures show how Jacques grows up to merge his love for inventing, film and the ocean. He invents the aqualung and brings underwater footage to the world. Great option for Storytelling because of it's clear plot and great pictures. #lae3414sp19

dayuso1 Teachers can use UDL strategy Optimize Choice and Autonomy (7.1). Students would write a story about where they would go and what they would do if they were a scuba diver. Teachers can help all students including ELLs by having the class physically pretend they are scuba divers in the ocean, which also helps ELLs to grasp the concept (ESOL 18). 6y
dayuso1 As an extension resource, teachers can show clips from Cousteau's actual films. An example is linked below, found easily through YouTube. https://youtu.be/hM9pa5JQmz0 6y
