#lae3414sp19 This SF book written and illustrated by Jan Brett is a story of a hedgehog who gets to live our their dream of being an astronaut when they are the only one small enough to save planet sparkler. He started as a member of the cleaning crew and ended up saving the planet! This book has a great message on achieving your dreams!

mluter I would utilize this book to practice story elements. This lesson plan template gives a place to highlight the important parts of this book like the setting, main character, and conflict. https://www.teachingbooks.net/clp.cgi?master_id=22417&lf_id=9 The UDL principle for this is 3.2 because they are picking out key details. The ESOL strategies are 32 and 44. I would allow students to complete this lesson in partner pairs. 6y
DrSpalding Just because it is dealing with space does not mean it is science fiction. Look back at your flipbook! This would be considered fantasy. 6y

Hedgie Blasts Off! by Jan Brett is a F story that would be great for a RA. This story is about Hedgie becoming an astronaut and his journey into space. It shows his discoveries in space and what planet he finds. One ESOL strategy is 14. Which is to simplify your speech by making it slower and redundant. This story is a bit lengthy so 14 will be a must. A UDL would be 2.4 Which is to promote an understanding across languages.

emilybanne This will be important because space may be something our students do not know about and we have to make sure we clarify questions and do the best we can using strategies to help our students understand the big idea. An activity is: http://www.janbrett.com/newsnotes/hedgie_blasts_off_newsnotes_page_2.htm Jan Brett gives a fun handout where the students can learn about geysers! 6y
emilybanne The students can make a chart or graphic organizer about geysers and share with the class. This would be a fun station during reading time. #UCFLAE3414SUB18 6y
DrSpalding Her site is the best! Good choice… Don‘t forget to use the Pikotochart! 6y

Starting the day on this totally-adorable note, even though I still feel like death warmed over. My time sheet, at least, will thank me for my attempts, and I have a book about a spacefaring hedgehog. #hedgieblastsoff #janbrett

cobwebmoth I hope you start to feel better soon! 7y
actualdisneyprincess @cobwebmoth thanks, lady!! I‘m working on it!! (I‘ve already warned my coworkers that my tolerance for stupidity becomes nonexistent when I‘m sick, so the likelihood that I‘ll actually tell people who ask me dumb shit that they‘re dumb is exponentially high. 😂) 7y

This encouraging SF picture book is about a hedgehog engineer who one day is offered the chance to go into space for his Dog coworkers who were to large for the rocket 🚀 Jan Brett loves animal themes and this was perfect to fit anyone who thinks they can‘t do something to always keep your fingers crossed and work hard. UDL 4.2 can go along with the tech theme of SF. #ucflae3414f17
