Finger Rhymes | Marc Tolon Brown
post image
Pickpick

Finger Rhymes by Marc Brown is a really cute P book that would work great for choral reading. It is a whole book that has different mini poems and rhymes in it , that have actions to go along with it. An ESOL Strategy would be 14 which is to simplify your speech by making it slower and more redundant. This is important and it will be easy since the poems are short. A UDL would be 1.3 Which is to offer alternatives for visual information.

emilybanne The students can work on reading the poems by also using the hand motions that go with them. It will increase vocabulary as well. The pictures in the book will help them to use context clues as to what the vocab words are as well. An activity is: http://msue.anr.msu.edu/news/fingerplays_and_songs_encourage_development_in_youn... this website provides different plays that the students can put on using poems that incorporate movement! 6y

When Sophia Gets Angry-Really,Really,Really Angry.. By Molly Bang is such a good RF story that is great for a RA. It won the Caldecott Honnor and Zolotow Award. This book shows what Sophie does when she gets mad and how she calms down so she can go back to her happy stage. I love this book because it shows what kids can do when they get mad and many kids don't know what to do when they feel so angry. An ESOL Strategy is 22.

emilybanne Which is give students enough wait time who have a second language, to respond to questions. This is important because during RA you can ask questions that will help them reflect.UDL would be 7.2 Which is Optimize relevance, value, & authenticity. Make sure the students understand why it is so important to try different things like Sophie did to get calm when you are angry. A website that I found is:http://www.mollybang.com/Pages/sophie_act.html 6y

Miss Nelson Is Missing! | James Marshall, Harry Allard

Miss Nelson is missing is a MF book by Harry Allard and James Marshall. I love this book and I read it to my nieces all the time! It is about a class who is getting into a lot of trouble. Miss Nelson decides to come to school the next day as Miss. Viola Swamp. The kids completely make a 360 change in their behavior and realize they took Miss.Nelson for granted. This is a great RA book or even a fun PR if they are able to read at this level.

emilybanne An activity I found is here at: https://www.teachwithme.com/blogs/getting-to-the-core/item/4457-miss-nelson-is-m... It is an activity where the kids make a drawing of Miss.Nelson and then another drawing of Miss.Viola Swamp. They then glue each picture on a popsicle stick. The teacher will read aloud different personality traits. The student will raise the person he or she thinks matches the trait read aloud. 6y
emilybanne This is a great activity for comprehension. A UDL strategy is 3.2 which refers to highlighting patterns, critical features , big ideas, and relationships. The students will be able to compare the relationship of the students and how the kids act. An ESOL Strategy would be 30 which is to encourage the use of diagrams and drawings aids to identify concepts and seeing relationships. This is what they will be doing when they have the popsicle sticks. 6y
DianaHerrera I love the idea of having the students use images from both teachers and raise which one of the two matches to the personality being told. It sounds like a game that i bet students will love. @emilybanne 6y

Middle School The Worst Years of My Life , written by James Patterson and Chris Tebbetts, and illustrated by Laura Park, is a super fun RF book and also a New York Times Best Seller. This novel was a fun and easy read that talks about different struggles of a middle schooler, similar to Diary of a Wimpy Kid. I personally think Diary of a Wimpy Kid is better overall, but this book is still a great read, especially for those entering middle school.

emilybanne This book is good for an IR. The students will enjoy reading the book because of the simplicity of the writing style. One activity that is good can be found here: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=http://www.middleschoolbook... This link provides some questions and topics the book brings up. 6y
emilybanne The students can write or talk about it with a partner or even as a whole group. They can also talk to their parents about these topics and adreas any concerns they have about entering middle school. A UDL strategy can be 9.2 Which is Facilitate personal coping skills and strategies. Parents who are discussing these topics with their child can help with these coping strategies and they can use examples from the book to help as well. 6y
emilybanne An ESOL strategy would be 29 and that is to offer a variety of reference materials to the student that they can use at an independent level. I can give them a dictionary, scratch paper to write on, sticky notes to draw on, and they can use these materials to help get through the book independently. They can also highlight words they don't know and draw out connections they made while reading. #UCFLAE3414SUB18 6y

Where the Wild Things are by Maurice Sendak is a Caldecott winning MF book. This book is great for S. The kids are always so engaged when I read this book at the Pre-School. What happened and where did he go? Was he dreaming?

emilybanne One fun activity found here: http://www.edgalaxy.com/where-the-wild-things-are/ is to write an apology letter to his mom explain all the wild things he did! I think this is a cute idea to help writing skills as well as pick out the main details of the story. I'll Wait, Mr.Panda, is a F book that is written by Steve Antony. Mr.Panda has something very special that he is baking for his friends. Everyone keeps asking if he will be done yet. They all get tired of waiting and just leave. At the end, only one friend is left waiting patiently. This penguin gets to have the special treat all to himself! This book is a great way to teach patience to kids and show them that sometimes it is worth the wait!

emilybanne One great activity the author suggested was to reenact the story in a class play! You can give the kids each a few lines and have then pick which character they want to be. Record it and invite other classes to watch the performance! www.steveantony.com/please-mr-panda-class-activity-idea-reenact-the-story-in-your-very-own-class-play The ESOL strategy I chose is #50 which is using a variety of comprehension techniques. 6y
emilybanne In this case it is role play. This allows the students to be more engaged in the book and memorize lines based off the story. A UDL guideline that can be used is 9.1 which is promote expectations and beliefs that optimize motivation. Is a NF book that explains the history about popcorn, how process of growing corn works and how to make the popcorn so you can eat it. In the back of the book it actually has two different ways you can make popcorn step by step. A great ESOL strategy is 31. Which is writing instructions and problems using shorter or less complex sentences.

emilybanne You can write a modified instruction list and add pictures so the students can easily read it when they go home and want to make popcorn with their family. One great activity I found is that you can graph the students favorite flavor of ppopcorn.
