War in 140 Characters
War in 140 Characters: How Social Media Is Reshaping Conflict in the Twenty-First Century | David Patrikarakos
5 posts | 1 read | 2 to read
A leading foreign correspondent looks at how social media has transformed the modern battlefield, and how wars are fought Modern warfare is a war of narratives, where bullets are fired both physically and virtually. Whether you are a president or a terrorist, if you don't understand how to deploy the power of social media effectively you may win the odd battle but you will lose a twenty-first century war. Here, journalist David Patrikarakos draws on unprecedented access to key players to provide a new narrative for modern warfare. He travels thousands of miles across continents to meet a de-radicalized female member of ISIS recruited via Skype, a liberal Russian in Siberia who takes a job manufacturing "Ukrainian" news, and many others to explore the way social media has transformed the way we fight, win, and consume wars-and what this means for the world going forward.

This book took me a while to finish, but it was eye- opening. I had never thought about how much the advent of web 2.0 changed the way we interact with the world. Lots of information here and examples from different places from around the world,so it feels like a brain dump sometimes, but it shifted my thinking as well.

The whole part within the green is powerful stuff. It's such an interesting way to look at the interplay between religion, our notions of wanting freedom for ourselves, and terrorism. Fascinating

The more I read about present-day political situations, the more Putin comes up, and the scarier he gets. This book is about how a large percentage of "war" is now done through trying to change the discourse surrounding the countries, rather than the 20th century idea of war.

BarbaraTheBibliophage Another for my stack. Thanks. Here‘s one about 21st century war. 6y

My library always has the best selection of new releases I've never heard of - which is saying something considering that I work in a bookstore! Really excited about these 3...as well as the other 17 books hiding in my car so my husband can't complain about how many I got! #libraryhaul #newreleases
