The Well
The Well: Popular Penguins | Elizabeth Jolley
3 posts | 5 read | 1 to read
Driving one night along the deserted track that leads to the farm, Miss Hester Harper and Katherine run into a mysterious creature. They dump the body into the farm's deep well but the voice of the injured intruder will not be stilled and the closer Katherine is drawn to the edge of the well, the farther away she gets from Hester. A twentieth-century Australian classic, The Well is a haunting and wryly humorous tale of memory, desire and loneliness.

‘What have you brought me, Hester? What have you brought me from the shop?‘
‘I‘ve brought Katherine, Father,‘ Miss Harper said. ‘I‘ve brought Katherine, but she‘s for me.‘
This book is a creepy physiological drama. It‘s about an obsessive unconventional relationship between 2 women. The story is quite ambiguous in parts and requires you to decide what‘s real and what‘s insanity.

MrsMalaprop Love Elizabeth Jolley. I was lucky to have her as a lecturer at uni 🙏❤️. 6y

Mehso-so

More the story of the strange relationship between wealthy older ranch owner Hester and the orphan she took in, Katherine, who is now her companion, than a plot-driven story about what happens after the truck Katherine is driving hits someone and Hester dumps the body into an old well, this short novel by Australian master Jolley, is both chilling and puzzling.

Last week the weather was too hot, this week it‘s becoming too cold. But oh well, it‘s given me the best excuse to curl up for the rest of today with some good books. Up first, The Well.
