The Summer of Chasing Mermaids
The Summer of Chasing Mermaids | Sarah Ockler
14 posts | 17 read | 24 to read
From the bestselling author of Twenty Boy Summer, a talented singer loses her ability to speak after a tragic accident, leading her to a postcard-perfect seaside town to find romance. The youngest of six talented sisters, Elyse dAbreau was destined for stardomuntil a boating accident took everything from her. Now, the most beautiful singer in Tobago cant sing. She cant even speak. Seeking quiet solitude, Elyse accepts a friends invitation to Atargatis Cove. Named for the mythical first mermaid, the Oregon seaside town is everything Elyses home in the Caribbean isnt: an ocean too cold for swimming, parties too tame for singing, and people too polite to pryexcept for one. Christian Kane is a notorious playboyinsolent, arrogant, and completely charming. Hes also the only person in Atargatis Cove who doesnt treat Elyse like a glass statue. He challenges her to express herself, and he admires the way she treats his younger brother, Sebastian, who believes Elyse is the legendary mermaid come to life. When Christian needs a first mate for the Coves high-stakes Pirate Regatta, Elyse reluctantly stows her fear of the sea and climbs aboard. The ocean isnt the only thing making waves, thoughswept up in Christians seductive tide and entranced by the Coves charms, Elyse begins to wonder if a life of solitude isnt what she needs. But changing course again means facing her past. It means finding her inner voice. And scariest of all, it means opening her heart to a boy whos best known for breaking them

I really enjoyed this book. Great summer read and it didn't hurt that it was set in the coast of Oregon. I have been to the places mentioned like Thor's Well and could picture the characters there. I loved Elyse relationship with the Kane brothers. Sebastian was so cute and fearless.

This isn't a book by Sarah Ockler but I couldn't find the author on Litsy.

Does anyone else hate seeing hashtags used in books or am I the only one?

Drives me nuts.

CaitlinSiem I can say I've never seen something like that before. But I do not like that. At all. 8y
That-Bookish-Hiker @CaitlinSiem I've only seen it done in ebooks and I hate it. It takes away from the story and it just doesn't belong in books. 8y

Why does the library have to put the barcode on the cover?! 😫 it ruins my book picture aesthetics lol.

Words were one thing, letters on the page. On the wall. On the skin. But he was so, so wrong. Without a pen, without a surface on which to let the letters run, I held back everything.

This was such a cute retelling of an old fairytale! More interesting than I expected and a great book to start off the summer with!
