"As I've slowly gotten to know my parents at least a little better, have learned of their struggles, their successes, heartache, and loss, I have finally begun to accept and to love them, maybe not as my parents, not yet, but simply as people."

It took me a long to finish this but that was because I was actually reading this when my mom died at the end of March. I had it in my bag when I sat with her in the hospital as she died. And it‘s suddenly ironic title. I‘ve lost both my parents or well people who raised me. So it was super close to home. I don‘t feel like I can‘t rate it properly given the circumstances.

Nisjdjd So sorry to hear of your losses, but hopefully some bibliotherapy will help a teeny-tiny bit.😌 5y

In this memoir, Anya digs DEEP into her parents past & into herself to learn who they were outside of her very troubled relationship with them. This is a truthful, unflinching look at what it is to love, be loved by, & ultimately lose, alcoholic & abusive parents. It's also an incredibly well-researched account of what made them. I love memoirs, but most of them are not this good, because it's really, really hard to be this honest.

Last night at Books Are Magic I got to see Anya Yurchyshyn in conversation with fellow author Emily Gould, promoting this investigative memoir into Yurchyshyn‘s family.
I‘m quite intrigued as I tackled a similar subject for my college thesis. 👌🏻

Just got my copy of My Dead Parents. Coming soon, my own grief book: Batman Lied to Me. Because you can only read so many of these grief books before you find a gaping hole in what they offer.

I am reviewing an ARC of this memoir. This is about Anya and her tumultuous relationship with her parents and her complete dissociation from them. After their deaths, as she is clearing her mother‘s house, she learns about her parent‘s life together and has to rethink everything about them and her relationship with each of them. It is at times, gut wrenching, but always engaging.

Pretty good summary of what this book is actually about...what Anya is ultimately struggling with...

This memoir was not what I expected based on the blurb. She relates her early life as she saw it before her parents died and revisits her own experience in light of more information, the benefit of asking questions and trying to get outside her own interpretation to see a fuller picture. Her honesty and courageous seeking makes for a lovely, well-written story. Highly recommended. #netgalley
