I forgot to post last week. I don‘t know how I escaped reading Mandy before now as it remains one of my daughter‘s favorite books. It is delightful and she was so surprised when I told her it was written by Julie Andrew‘s!
I loved Woodworking! So glad it was a #CampLitsy25 selection.

How did I not read this as a little girl? It's so exactly my cup of tea, evoking memories of The Secret Garden, Sensible Kate and other beloved orphan stories. I like how Mandy starts out seeming so perfect, but we learn she has a lot of normal childish feelings and dumb ideas. 😂 And the ending is just perfect, because it addresses the unasked question of a lot of orphanage stories -- what about the other kids?

What a sweet story! Yes, I cried during the Winter chapters.😭 I heard that in 1968 Julie & husband Blake Edwards were shooting a movie in Ireland at an old manor house enclosed with thick walls & a cottage decorated entirely with seashells. “The moment I saw it, Julie says, “the seed of a story lodged in my mind.” Thrilled this amazing actress/singer added writing children‘s books to her repertoire.🤩🙌🏻

It may be menopause, but Mandy has made emotional. A realistic look of an orphan who experienced bitterness and frustration because she doesn't understand the feelings of desiring something of her own. She thinks it's a cottage she needs, but it's a family.
It just reminds me of the peace and joy of reading my wonderful books as a child. The font, the yellowing pages, the smell, all make me forget I am an adult and I back to simpler times.
