Nominated for the Bram Stoker Award for Superior Achievement in a First Novel Recent World War II veteran Bull Ingram is working as muscle when a Memphis DJ hires him to find Ramblin' John Hastur. The mysterious blues man's dark, driving music - broadcast at ever-shifting frequencies by a phantom radio station - is said to make living men insane and dead men rise. Disturbed and enraged by the bootleg recording the DJ plays for him, Ingram follows Hastur's trail into the strange, uncivilized backwoods of Arkansas, where he hears rumors the musician has sold his soul to the Devil. But as Ingram closes in on Hastur and those who have crossed his path, he'll learn there are forces much more malevolent than the Devil and reckonings more painful than Hell... In a masterful debut of Lovecraftian horror and Southern gothic menace, John Hornor Jacobs reveals the fragility of free will, the dangerous power of sacrifice, and the insidious strength of blood.

Looking forward to October‘s #TitlesAndTunes #Blues

This book about a missing blues man in Arkansas fits so many challenges it better not let me down 🤣

For a song I went with Steep Canyon Rangers which is more bluegrass than blues. I need to add some blues to my life so am looking forward to the playlist.

BarbaraBB Thanks for adding your book and song. I bet it will be a wonderful playlist! 14mo
Cinfhen I went bluegrass too, although I‘d love to hear some really old time blues 🎶 14mo

This book probably never would have been on my radar if it weren‘t for my attempt at #50States50Scares. This was my Arkansas book and wow it‘s a heck of a debut novel. Somehow, it‘s a southern gothic/detective story/Cthulhu-ish/horror novel that just works. It‘s scary, smart, and engaging, but definitely not for everyone… very gory, really brutal, and bad stuff happens to animals, adults and kids. I really loved the main characters.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

vivastory I really enjoyed this collection of two novellas by Jacobs 3y
sprainedbrain @vivastory I will check that out! 3y

“For a moment he felt like he had never really heard music before, like he had been missing some component of his soul that had not come shipped in the original package.”
Lewis “Bull” Ingram takes a job to the Deep South to find out what happened to Early Freeman. And gets tangled into a cosmic horror tale he might not make it out of alive. This is a stellar debut novel! #southerngods #cosmichorror

Southern Gods is a grotesque journey into blues music, possession, & mysticism. From start to finish, I was unable to put this book down. The creativity of its characters, setting, and concept blends perfectly together & casts upon its readers a spell that will keep them flipping pages well past the witching hour. While not shying away from blood & brutality, Jacobs provides his characters with heart, while focusing on social issues.

More than halfway through. This is like what would happen if the sickness of Clive Barker mated with Lovecraft in a Stephen Kingesque Southern setting. The bar scene was disturbing and it played out like some grotesque orgy of horrors. Not for the faint of heart.

PirateJenny Sounds fabulous! 7y
IndyHannaJones I loved the first 75% but then....tell me what you think 7y
BookwormOfTheDamned Well, I'm past the scene where Sarah learned of the book's true meaning. I'm maybe about 3 hours away from the end. 7y

BookwormOfTheDamned @Hyaeger finished it. The ending surprised me, but I still enjoyed the book in its entirety. 7y
IndyHannaJones @AlexanderSBrown I just felt like the last 25% kind of completely changed rhythm and feel? I liked the book overall! 7y
BookwormOfTheDamned @Hyaeger I could see how it changed the feel, mostly because I wasn't suspecting the curveball. 7y
BookwormOfTheDamned @Hyaeger also, the ending did seem rushed, but I thought it was because of everything that was going down. 7y
BookwormOfTheDamned @Hyaeger I'd like to see a sequel where the daughter has to battle the antagonist later in life. 7y

This does for blues music what Videodrome did for sex tapes.

Not for the faint of heart. Very scary and gory. Bull was a sexy beast. Light spoilers: I feel like the last fourth of the book really went away from the original plot line and I felt like there needed more expansion about certain things that happen at the end. There is a part at the end of the book that involves a little girl that might bother some readers so just be warned in case you are sensitive to those sorts of things.

BookwormOfTheDamned About to read. 7y
BookwormOfTheDamned Holy crap! I'm halfway through! I can't understand how this gem isn't on bestseller shelves! (edited) 7y

"Tell that little dumpling that I was born a wolf, and after many years, I'm finally becoming human." Last day of summer break. Ugh. The kids here go back so friggen early. And I've been having trouble sleeping because of this bizarre condition called horror novels.

BookishMarginalia The end of summer break is upon us too. I've spent the summer reading voraciously and it's so very hard to let that go... 8y
IndyHannaJones @BookishMarginalia Yup. The kids are back Monday. Ugh. It's like 100 degrees and just uggggh 8y

As Sunday evening winds down, I've started this one. A musician selling his soul to the devil? A phantom radio station which broadcasts things to drive men mad and raise the dead? Ok- I'll check it out.

QueenAnne Sounds like my kinda book! Adding it 😍📚 8y
tpixie Sounds like it could be a premise for Stephen King! 8y

He had me at—the opening scene, I guess. And then Every Single Scene After, right up until the end. I could not have been one single whit more enthralled. There's action, comedy, horror, music, history. There's metaphysics and sex and monsters—everything good, it's right here waiting for you.

Joe_Jones That was a fun book! 9y
