Gods of Mars
Gods of Mars | EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS
After his death-defying feats in "Princess of Mars," John Carter was forced to return to Earth--but 10 years later, he's finally sent back to the Red Planet. Carter dreams of reuniting with his beautiful wife Dejah Thoris, but first he must join his Martian ally Tars Tarkas to battle a wide array of enemies--including the deadly Pirates of Barsoom on their speeding aerial craft. Amidst all the thrilling swordplay and intrigue, Carter learns more about the ancient theological, racial, and political divisions that have kept Mars in strife for centuries. "

Pickpick

There's virtually no preamble, Burroughs just catapults Carter into the heart of the adventure and you, dear reader, better catch your breath and try to keep up with the mightiest warrior Mars has ever known!

The previous book ended on a cliffhanger and, fair warning, so does this one: best have the first three books gathered together if this is your initial voyage to the dead sea bottoms of Barsoom. 👇🏼

Bookwomble Amidst the adventure is a moral, that organised religions are often not to be trusted as they become vehicles for corruption, exploitation, abuse and self-aggrandisement. Who knew? 🤷🏻‍♂️ 6y

From 007 junk food, to ERB comfort food...
I read the edition on the left, with it's risqué Deja Thoris cover, in the mid-70s when I was at school, but it's become a little too fragile to re-read, so it's the early-80s edition on the right, with its risqué John Carter cover, that I'm going to now.
I love Michael Whelan's cover art for these Del Rey editions; he did his research meticulously.

Weaponxgirl Did you watch the John Carter movie? 6y
Bookwomble @Weaponxgirl Many times! And I'm about to watch it again while I do some ironing 😊 It's such a shame that Disney mishandled the marketing of the film as it's got excellent fx, some brilliant character actors and a decent plotline. Sadly, I think a sequel is never going to happen, but perhaps a reboot might be possible in time. 6y
Weaponxgirl @Bookwomble it bombed so bad so when I watched it I wasn‘t expecting much and then I was just like wow, this is a really solid sci fi that totally deserves a sequel! Some great action scenes too. Why do we have a kazillion transformers even though we all know the cartoon movie was superior and only one of these? 6y

Bookwomble @Weaponxgirl I think if they'd simply added "of Mars" to the title it would have done better as people would get an idea of the type of film it is. Just calling it "John Carter" tells the average person nothing. Without a big name attached, such as Keanu Reeves in "John Wick", this was a silly blunder. Plus, I think, they just didn't spend enough on the marketing campaign. Terrible shame, and a waste of effort for a lot of talented people. 6y
Weaponxgirl @Bookwomble I heard there was some conflict on the set that didn‘t help too. But yes the of Mars would have helped a lot. 6y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk Oh Deja Thoris, why do you hate clothes? I read the first 3 books with those gorgeous Michael Whelan covers in middle school and they hold a special place in my heart. 6y
TieDyeDude @Weaponxgirl @Bookwomble The tagged book was a thoroughly fascinating look at the blunders in handling the film. I really enjoyed the movie, looking forward to digging into the novels soon. 6y
Bookwomble @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I love those covers, too 😊 6y
Bookwomble @TieDyeDude Thanks for the info. It's rather tragic that the influence for such a lot of sci-fi adventure films should be so poorly served by the makers of its own adaptation. 6y

Mehso-so

While I didn't like this book as much as the first one, Princess of Mars, It was still a great read. At times I had chills and admittedly, cried once or twice. There was definitely more lulls in the action in this book but I enjoyed the intermingling of the Martian's mythology and the surprise of several new cultures. While it wasn‘t my favorite I still cant wait to read the next book! #beachbook #vacationread
