Michael Bennett is known for his time in the NFL, but also used his platform as a professional athlete to talk about his experience as a black man in America. His chapter on the NCAA and PTSD should be read by everyone in academia, and his commentary on the NFL (white men in positions of power, they call themselves owners, the treatment of Colin K, etc) is also important reading. I may have skimmed some of the sportsing stuff but that's just me.
I thoroughly enjoyed this entire book. I kept waiting to get uncomfortable but as I was reading to learn I didn‘t get there much at all. I learned many things and will continue thinking about them. I liked how Bennett said, “You have to be uncomfortable to grow...if we feel uncomfortable we are doing something right”
Before the forward was even done, this book has my attention. I love it. It's already reminding me of 'The Hate U Give'.
This book was so inspiring. I have so much respect and admiration for Michael Bennett. I'm no longer uncomfortable. I'm totally onboard. I love this guy!
Amazing what we can learn and do when we finally step away from "comfortable"......when we put people before the "brand".
Highly recommended.

And the best for last...Michael Bennett
"I think we get attacked for standing up for others precisely because doing so opens an Avenue for change, and change threatens the status quo and those in positions of power."
"You want them "to be that nig*er", and saying the word is the first step to turning them into how you see them. Not the way they are at work or with thei kids, but your projection of who you want them to be.."
" We need to do more than that, and we need to reach out beyond where it's comfortable."
Michael Bennett❤❤
"They want us to be brands, not men."
"To me these twin issues, food justice and STEM education, are globally essential if we are going to see the next generation climb out of poverty.
"It was impossible to avoid the contrast: poverty and malnutrition in Haiti mean starvation, while poverty and malnutrition here meant early-onset diabetes and obesity."
Michael Bennett❤
"When you reach that level of brotherhood, I truly believe that's when you win. You lose the ego, and it stops being about you. It's about the people around you. People get it backward and think winning is the end goal. But when the goal is brotherhood, the winning will come and mean so much more."
Michael Bennett.
Next up, this! I've been looking forward to reading it, and everyone seems to like it.
This is an excellent personal and raw biography from a man that wants nothing more than to be honest and authentic. He speaks about personal struggles and failures truthfully. He also gives a human face to the NFL protest and BLM. I think any College football fan or NFL fan should give it a listen.
So growing up in a small Canadian community, my experience didn‘t include anything like Mr Bennett‘s. His raw, thoughtful exploration of race and power was a great education for me. The book is bold and fearless and far more human and varied than I expected. The prose is direct and unsophisticated but I think that adds to the power of the book rather than diminishes it.
Love this birthday card! Saw it at the grocery store.
Just starting this one. Couldn‘t pass up the title.
I already like Michael Bennett, but I was floored at how insightful, educational, eye-opening, and funny this book is. I don‘t know much about football but this book really helped me learn about how corrupt and awful the NFL is. I really recommend, especially in light of the NFL statement released yesterday.
So beyond excellent! Bennett writes about the NCAA and the NFL, yes, but not in a way that is particularly about sports. He's writing about the humans in the game and the social politics surrounding them. Much of it isn't about football at all, but empowering readers to be good humans. Bennett's efforts to use his voice to lift others up are inspiring. A work of thought and action that may not make you comfortable but will inspire you to grow.
Michael Bennett wrote a book. It is my anthem for the new year.
