Wandering Earth: Classic Science Fiction Collection
Wandering Earth: Classic Science Fiction Collection | Cixin Liu
16 posts | 5 read | 17 to read
"The Wandering Earth" is a collection of short stories by Cixin Liu, China's most acclaimed contemporary science-fiction author. Unabashedly classic in the great tradition of Asimov and Clarke, Cixin Liu's science-fiction is firmly rooted in the cosmic. "[most] literature has always left me with the impression of indulging an intense anthropocentric narcissism. [...] In the world of literature, the Sun exists for no other reason than to illuminate the pure, unadulterated countryside, the Moon has no other reason to shine than to cast the shadows of the seaside lovers, [but] if the universe is the Sahara, then all that makes the Earth a grain of gold within it, is that a particular bacteria called humanity clinging to its surface." Cixin Liu uses the unique perspective of science-fiction to take us on a journey into this majestic, desolate cosmos. He gives us the chance to reacquaint ourselves with the fundamental truth that in the face of a vast universe we are no more than a speck of dust; That the Earth is just another celestial body - And an extremely vulnerable one at that. The flash of a gamma-ray burst or the blast of a nearby supernova could, at any moment, reduce our cherished home to nothing but ashes. It can be terrifying to contemplate the end of our world and stories that describe such destruction can be disturbing. At the same time however, they can leave us feeling not only entertained, but exhilarated and inspired. Maybe, they can even give us a chance to renew our love of life. Most stories found in the "The Wandering Earth" collection take us to a sci-fi vision of Earth's end. But here, there are no Hollywood aliens, descending from the depths of space to blow up our cities. In these futures, the dangers humanity faces are much stranger and whimsical than that. The unexpected calamities that befall his richly detailed worlds are only eclipsed by humanity's epic, but always plausible, attempts to escape destruction. In all this peril and doom, Cixin Liu always feels for humanity. His stories are full of a deep love for all of Earth's peoples. But even this love does not escape reflection and even ridicule when viewed through his unrelenting cosmic lens. No matter how dearly one loves the Earth, humanity and all its cultures, there is no avoiding the cold, hard truth that they mean absolutely nothing when viewed against the vastness of the universe. But even an infinite universe could not change the simple fact that we are worthy of love, that we need love. It is this twist that lies at the very heart of the stories in this collection. ----------------------- Reviews Cixin Liu's writing will remind SF fans of the genre's golden age, with its positive focus on scientific development, combined with a consistently constructive vision of China's future role as a global superpower. It's characteristic of an SF genre which has been embraced by Chinese culture because it is seen as representing the values of technological innovation and creativity so highly prized in a country developing more quickly than any other in the world today. - Damien Walter, The Guardian A science fiction tale with a Chinese touch. The Wandering Earth is filled with imaginative tech and a moving world, literally. - Indiebookoftheday.com

Our guy Liu Cixin likes his exposition dumps, but damn if they aren't terrifyingly close to home sometimes! This one paints a horrific hypothetical on rampant capitalism. Read it for yourself and try not to be freaked by how relevant the piece is!

In a future where aliens hover in limbo above Earth, a hit man questions why he was tasked with "processing" a number of homeless people, and stumbles on the history of these interstellar migrants.

I swear to God this exposition is dense but dammit it keeps chilling me!

Apparently on First Earth, the Alien's homeworld, the rich isolated themselves in such a radically different environment that they literally split off into a different species from the rest of humanity.

Been buried in reading and a new part-time, but still demanding, job.

Anyways:
The last sentence gave me chills.

An alien from a different Earth is describing how the wealth gap--or rather CHASM--lead all the residents of his planet to flee to this Earth. After education became less, and less affordable, an advance in technology changed the nature of education and the transferring of information.

So Stephen Hawking makes an appearance in this one...

More Liu Cixin.

Part alternate history, part political satire, part cautionary tale. Ants and Dinosaurs work together to create an industrial age, but growing friction and eventual mistrust lead to horrendous consequences.

I have so much library reading 😰
Forgot to utilize the dang suspend function so here we are 🙄
This one is good so far. I heard about the movie first and watched Because Science's episode on it and the (im)plausibility of the premise, BUT there is still a lot of scientific thought put into this and that's what I am enjoying.

An anthology of Liu's short stories. Fascinatingly different feel from Western hard sf

Even nail clippers and bottle openers were no exception. The former could analyse the cut nail matter and send an alert about a calcium deficiency via text or email. The latter could determine if the spirits in the bottle were the genuine article and send a notification if the bottle had won a sweepstakes. The bottle openers were even capable of forcing breaks in drinking, if the user had become excessively intoxicated.

These hard sci-fi stories are smart, thought provoking and intellectually chewy. Characters & prose take a back seat to concepts and ideas. The parable-like stories include:

- Earth relocates to a distant star
- Aliens arrive from a "bubble world"
- Super intelligent ants and dinosaurs at war with each other
- The gods (aliens) who created us return to earth to be looked after by humans in their dotage

AlaMich "Intellectually chewy"... that is a superb way to describe the phenomenon!!! ? 7y

Hmm, reading has slowed to a snail's pace this month (I'm not calling it a slump!). I've been slowly working through this collection of sci-fi novellas/stories & am thoroughly enjoying it 👍

Cinfhen Gorgeous pic💙I mailed the books to you last week, the post office told me 7 days...so hopefully you'll have some new options to choose from soon! 7y
Izai.Amorim Now that's a beach! If you sail straight ahead, will you arrive in Chile? (I always wonder what's on the other side) 7y
WarpedSweetness My reading has slowed down the last couple of months. That is a gorgeous view. I'm slightly jealous. Lol 7y
Marchpane @Reviewsbylola @WarpedSweetness I'm enjoying the slower pace of life at the moment 😊 7y
Marchpane @Cinfhen yay! Thanks so much, I can't wait 😊 7y
Marchpane @Izai.Amorim going due east, eventually you'd get to northern Chile, yes! First you have to go almost half way around the globe (the Pacific Ocean is BIG) 🌎 7y
Izai.Amorim @Marchpane I know it was a silly question but it comes automatically to me. As a child I already wondered, "straight ahead, Africa. But how much to the left to Europe?" It's probably genetic. We from the New World got there because some ancestor asked, "what's on the other side?" Never seen the Pacific. ☹️ 7y
Marchpane @Izai.Amorim I don't think it's silly at all. From here, almost everywhere is "over the sea and far away" ? I have a bit of a thing with latitudes, I always wonder "what is the northern hemisphere equivalent of here?" Eg we are roughly the same distance from the equator as Miami, Florida 7y
