A brightly fun and incredibly moving novel about three bickering adult siblings rebuilding their family in the wake of tragedy for readers of The Nest. When their father invites the three Blair siblings home to his New Hampshire farm for a long weekend, Ruth, George, and Lizzie agree to keep things pleasant. But each one has a secret agenda. And, in true Blair fashion, so does their father, Murray. He thinks that if he can just get Lizzie in a room with Ruth and George, they'll convince her to break up with her much older boyfriend. But his plans, along with those of his children, are derailed when Lizzie turns up with a burnt hand, a damaged family cookbook, and the possibility of criminal charges. This is not the first time the Blair family has been thrown into chaos. In fact, that cookbook, an old Fannie Farmer's Boston Cooking School edition, is the last remaining artifact from a more idyllic time, a time when they had a mother and an older brother and a public reputation to maintain. A time before the accident. And the handwritten notes inside its pages are a trail leading back to their mother, Lillian, whose own life and all its mysteries become a second narrative alongside that of her family. With great care and a warmly genuine sense of humor, Elisabeth Hyde crafts two interweaving stories: the life and death of Lillian Blair, and the over-bearing, bickering, but loving children who look for ways to connect with one another in her absence. In both accounts, Hyde reminds readers that families fight both with and for each other.

This was a slow burn family drama that just didn‘t wow me. I kept waiting for more and it never delivered. The cover is gorgeous and it had so much potential. 3 grown siblings all spending the weekend with their father. Chaos, sibling rivalry, and drama ensues but something about it just didn‘t land for me. Was hoping for more connection with the mom and it didn‘t feel genuine I think. #theycantallbe5stars

TerriGreen That is a pretty cover. I have never heard of this book or author before. 4y

A bittersweet novel about family dysfunction and healing. The Blaire clan is summoned by their ailing father to deal with his estate and well being until old issues from sibling rivalries to family secrets surface leading the trio of members to resolve their personal conflicts and heal their broken unit in this dramedy that is both well written and compelling.

This was a good read, but terrible timing on my part. I experienced a major like altering experience like the characters of this book several years ago on April 29th, so without spewing spoilers all over the place, it triggered some emotions that I'm not good at showing. I was in tears and I hate to read or watch anything that will make me cry. I thought it was we'll written, I would have liked it more if my timing wasn't so far off!

My first experience with this author- this is an entertaining family drama set in New Hampshire with plenty of bickering, secrets and reflections on the past between the adult Blair #siblings - unfortunately I never felt very emotionally connected to any of the siblings or parents and it never felt like a fresh or very new story... #HopIntoSpring @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @vkois88

TorieStorieS @Kaye Thank you again for the bookmark- it matches this book perfectly!! 👏👏👏 6y
Kaye Very good ! I‘m trying to catch in, since lots of others pick bookmarks to match their books. That one is a good match. Nice review, too. Thank you for the tag. ♥️ 6y
TorieStorieS Thanks, @Kaye !! Bookmark matching is a recent thing for me, too- I most frequently end up using scrap paper or even the receipt from the book! 6y

The Blaire family has had to overcome a tragic loss. They are still learning to cope 32 years later. It is a good family drama read, on par with The Nest and Commonwealth. It will probably not be my most favorite read of the year but I can see it being near the top. #firsttoread #2018christyread
