I really wasn‘t feeling it. It was only 200 pages but I felt the actual story could have been half that. I didn‘t like the murderer‘s motivations or really lack thereof, nor did I think some of the stuff around the murder itself was necessary to the storyline. It all just got super convoluted for me and honestly I‘m just glad to be done. Maybe some of James‘ other writings are better but this was a huge flop for me.

Oh yes, I think Cordelia Gray and I shall get along just fine. #currentread

Here‘s what I was working on while listening to this audiobook! This was a reread for me, and while I had initially gave it 5 Stars in 2012 (my first P.D. James) I rated it 4 stars this time around. I love literary mysteries! I think this was actually the first one I‘d encountered. Since then, I read many books that fit this description, and I can see how those authors were influenced by James.

I read this in 2012, and I just had a hankering for Cambridge and Cordelia. So I used an #audible credit to get my fix, and then also purchased the sequel which I always meant to read.

Missusb Loved these back in the day. 6y
EvieBee @Missusb Realized today that they were written in ‘72! They stand up to the test of time. Only the technology part dates it. 6y

I'm not sure how this book got on my radar - I don't read mysteries often. I did like this one generally although I feel like the balance between exposition and detective work was off. Cordelia starts off as a competent detective and her observations are keen. She makes reasonable inferences from clues she finds. But then characters will simply blurt out what they did and why. Even so there were some surprising bits, twists I wasn't expecting.

Loved the character of Cordelia Gray. Left a detective agency by her boss, her first case is to determine why a young graduate has killed himself or was it murder. 🤔Great plot and writing. Think I am going to have to get more PD James books😀
