The Virtue of Selfishness
The Virtue of Selfishness | Ayn Rand
Ayn Rand here sets forth the moral principles of Objectivism, the philosophy that holds human life--the life proper to a rational being--as the standard of moral values and regards altruism as incompatible with man's nature, with the creative requirements of his survival, and with a free society. “Pride is one‘s response to one‘s power to achieve values, the pleasure one takes in one‘s efficacy. And it is this that mystics hold as evil.”

LiterRohde It‘s been interesting reading through these quotes; seeing the different connotations to the word pride. I think mine might be in the minority as seeing it as good. I admit selfishness as a virtue seems strange, but the more I think and read... (edited) 5y

I read some Rand as a teenager, & liked it enough. I read Anthem later, & really liked it.
Given our current politics, I thought I‘d give this a try. It‘s been on my shelves forever.
But when your opening argument is to use your own character as a model for your philosophy, I can‘t take you seriously. I even skimmed a few of the other chapters. Perhaps individualism is a fair personal philosophy. But it‘s no way for a society to thrive.

TimSpalding Anthem is enjoyable. I haven‘t bothered with the rest of her doorstopping, “objectivist” oeuvre. 6y
Sweettartlaura @TimSpalding as a teenager things like The Fountainhead & Atlas Shrugged were conquests. Now, I don‘t know if I could stomach past page 50 6y

In a free society, one does not have to deal with those who are irrational. One is free to avoid them.

“The man who does not value himself, cannot value anything or anyone.”

There is nothing I value more than these girls. Love to see them play and learn. If the bath water isn't black they didn't play outside enough.
