Wolves at the Door: The True Story of America's Greatest Female Spy
Wolves at the Door: The True Story of America's Greatest Female Spy | Judith Pearson

Virginia Hall left her Baltimore home in 1931 to enter the Foreign Service and went to work for the British Special Operations Executive (SOE) when Hitler was building toward the peak of his power in Europe. She was assigned to France, where she helped the Resistance movement, escaped prisoners of war, and American Allied paratroopers. By 1942 she was considered so dangerous to the Gestapo that she had to escape over the Pyrenees mountains--on an artificial leg, no less. When she got to England, she was reassigned to France by the OSS, disguised as an old peasant woman. She helped capture 500 German soldiers and kill more than 150, while she sabotaged Nazi communications and transportation. Hitler's forces were hot on her trail, however, and her daring intelligence activities and indomitable spirit defied the expectations of even the Allies until the very end of the war. Her story was ignored for more than fifty years, and this book now brings Virginia Hall's story to patriots young and old.

Thanks for the tag @Meaw_catlady 😘

1. Tagged!
2. No plot, story drags on and on with no real action, lack of character development, too many stereotypes, overuse of tropes, and just because I‘m not feeling the story
3. Steve McHugh

Incredible read. 5🌟 I highly recommend this book, along with Code Girls.

She was honored highest civilian honors by the governments 3 countries, but thought it nonsense because:

“Bestowing an award on her simply for doing her work was as ludicrous as giving one to the horse that pulled a milk cart. And receiving it at a public ceremony in the White House was out of the question.” (On being awarded the U.S. Distinguished Service Cross)
👇🏻

wanderinglynn She would‘ve been an amazing woman to meet. Not only having to overcome the challenges of gender (which funnily enough she faced more of *after* the war), but also disability. Incredible. Her story is one that should be a must-read. 5y
wanderinglynn ***Trigger warnings*** this is a book about WWII and because of her role, the book does discuss some of the horrors that resistance members and others faced during this time. There are some torture descriptions. It‘s not graphic, but a stark & harsh reality. And so that may not be good for some to read. 5y
Booklover57 I will have to read this book. 5y

“The wolves are at the door.” In reference to Nazi soldiers in Crozant, France, March 1944.

Just finished the prologue to the tagged and WOW! What an incredible start! I can already tell that I‘m not going to be able to put this book down.

This book is an amazing true story about an American female spy working during World War 2. Beautifully and breathtakingly written non-fiction. I was on the edge of my seat reading this inspirational story.

wanderinglynn I enjoyed this book too. 👍🏻 4y
