One Goal
One Goal: A Coach, a Team, and the Game That Brought a Divided Town Together | Amy Bass
8 posts | 7 read | 5 to read
In the tradition of Friday Night Lights and Outcasts United, ONE GOAL tells the inspiring story of the soccer team in a town bristling with racial tension that united Somali refugees and multi-generation Mainers in their quest for state--and ultimately national--glory. When thousands of Somali refugees resettled in Lewiston, Maine, a struggling, overwhelmingly white town, longtime residents grew uneasy. Then the mayor wrote a letter asking Somalis to stop coming, which became a national story. While scandal threatened to subsume the town, its high school's soccer coach integrated Somali kids onto his team, and their passion began to heal old wounds. Taking readers behind the tumult of this controversial team--and onto the pitch where the teammates vied to become state champions and achieved a vital sense of understanding--ONE GOAL is a timely story about overcoming the prejudices that divide us.

My biggest goal of this challenge to run another 5k is done!! And I took 5 minutes off my time from #bfcr2. Progress! I was good about drinking water, got in 2 runs and 1 Lagree class, and managed to get outside everyday. Also finished 2 very enjoyable reads. Feeling good at the end of week 1. #bfcr4 @wanderinglynn @Kaylamburson @LauraBeth @m

I wanted to read ONE GOAL because I love stories about immigrants, the story takes place where I went to college, and the author is a fellow Bates College alum. This is ultimately the story of many individuals, their love of the game of soccer, and how both impacted their community. Some might call it a soccer story, and it is, but the bigger and more important picture is why sports matter. #eryneckireads2018 #nonfiction #bookstagram #18reads

Erynecki @Eggs I remember that story but missed the book! Thanks for the title. 6y
