It is Labor Day weekend. Americans are hitting the roads in droves. The radio crackles with warnings of traffic jams and accidents. Steve and his wife Nancy are due to drive up to Maine from New York City to pick up their two children from camp. But Steve wants a drink before he goes-he needs to relax after a long day at the office-and once he's on the road, he wants another. And another. Before long his suppressed rage at his wife starts coming out; she gets paid better than he does and he has to be home to make dinner for the kids. When Steve stops for yet another drink, Nancy has had enough; she stalks off. After that the drive turns into a bender. Wanting to rebel against his conventional life, along the way he picks up an enigmatic hitchhiker, Sid Hannigan, who happens to be an escapee from Sing-Sing prison. There's something about the man's lawlessness that makes Steve want to talk and keep talking, confessing all his domestic woes. After they part ways, Steve will have to soberly confront his actions of the previous day, discovering the secret of how his wife had also crossed Sid's path by chance.

I‘ve never read Simenon before, and this sounds different than most of his books. I appreciated how he handled the darkness lurking under this 50s suburban couple, but Nancy‘s reactions didn‘t seem believable.

Steve & Nancy set out from Long Island to pick up their kids at camp in Maine. But Steve keeps stopping in bars leaving Nancy in the car. She gets fed up and decides to find a bus, but Steve picks up another passenger: an escaped prisoner.

This week‘s #bookhaul! I had to pick up the UK Lessons before BD shut down. Such a better cover! I also picked up Sorry (another great cover) and I‘m a Fan, too. #BuyBuyBD I‘ll miss you! 😢

Had to go back to the NYRBs at the library. V picked over, but I got the tagged book. 👍🏻😁

I can‘t wait to read Hijab with everyone at #CampLitsy23, and I picked up Ascension from the longlist at the library!

BarbaraBB Wonderful haul! Chemistry is your kind of book I think 🤞🏽💕 2y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB I LOVED Chemistry last year, which is why I wanted the fun copy! 2y

3⭐️ I thought I would be reading about husband & wife drama, set in 1950s... you know, something like Revolutionary Road. Well, there are some quarrels there... and then, enter a fugitive from Sing Sing; and I got a good, disturbing read 🥰 I love Simenon for his details. This is my second novel of his, and I have 9 more (all are NYRB Classics) in my stacks 😑

Leftcoastzen I grabbed this from the library a few years ago on a whim. Remember liking it. 5y

sisilia I have them all @Liz_M It was quite an effort to find them because they are all out of print 5y
