Yesterday my youngest participated in the school district‘s social studies & science fair. As soon as she saw the brochure she said she wanted to do it (so huge for a kid with lots of anxiety). She said she wanted to do her presentation on Mae Jemison. She‘s worked hard for the last few weeks. She was interviewed by teachers & high school students. One of the teachers thanked her for highlighting such an important person in history. When asked why

Girls should continue to be encouraged to pursue careers in science and STEM. As you can see I have a daughter that dreams of being an astronaut. She said in a future letter to herself that she wants to be an engineer, the astronaut that is there to fix any problems on the space shuttle. We talk a lot about the long & hard road of becoming an astronaut (which will now be harder with recent roll backs in women being able to have an equitable space

I think this is a great topic to include in a 1-3 grade classroom. I feel space/astronaut theme could be super engaging for some students. I love the illustrations and the overall message of going for your dreams.

“If I can dream it, if I can believe in it, and if I work hard for it, anything is possible.“

Use this story to teach about pursuing dreams and breaking barriers. Ask students to share their own dreams for the future and what steps they could take to achieve them.

This is a beautifully illustrated and simply told story about the first female African-American astronaut, Mae Jamison. My only complaint is that it is TOO simple. Mae goes from being a little girl told she could never go to space to going to space, and the only detail on how she did it is basically by believing in herself and her dreams, and putting her mind to it. I‘m guessing there might have been a little more to it than that. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Such a great read! It deserves a spot in every classroom library. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Cute picture book based on Mae Jemison and her quest to become an astronaut. I really enjoyed the illustrations and the story was accessible. I appreciated the part where her teacher told her maybe she should do something else. I think it is hard for kids to know that sometimes adults who are supposed to be supportive won‘t be but that doesn‘t mean you should give up.
