Russian Roulette
Russian Roulette: The Inside Story of Putin's War on America and the Election of Donald Trump | Michael Isikoff, David Corn
32 posts | 16 read | 28 to read
The incredible, harrowing account of how American democracy was hacked by Moscow as part of a covert operation to influence the U.S. election and help Donald Trump gain the presidency. RUSSIAN ROULETTE is a story of political skullduggery unprecedented in American history. It weaves together tales of international intrigue, cyber espionage, and superpower rivalry. After U.S.-Russia relations soured, as Vladimir Putin moved to reassert Russian strength on the global stage, Moscow trained its best hackers and trolls on U.S. political targets and exploited WikiLeaks to disseminate information that could affect the 2016 election. The Russians were wildly successful and the great break-in of 2016 was no "third-rate burglary." It was far more sophisticated and sinister -- a brazen act of political espionage designed to interfere with American democracy. At the end of the day, Trump, the candidate who pursued business deals in Russia, won. And millions of Americans were left wondering, what the hell happened? This story of high-tech spying and multiple political feuds is told against the backdrop of Trump's strange relationship with Putin and the curious ties between members of his inner circle -- including Paul Manafort and Michael Flynn -- and Russia. RUSSIAN ROULETTE chronicles and explores this bizarre scandal, explains the stakes, and answers one of the biggest questions in American politics: How and why did a foreign government infiltrate the country's political process and gain influence in Washington?

Brushing up on current events. Manafort, Cohen, Stone. There is a cancer on the presidency and this well researched book unravels the treasonous plot of this absurd group of criminals and fame whores.

Wowser. I have always been confused by all the players in the Russia investigation and this book does a pretty good job explaining things. And making the case that Russia definitely did interfere heavily in our election in a bunch of different ways But I‘m mostly shocked at how routine all this hacking and spying is. I‘ve been very naive to this part of government, I think

Emilymdxn This sounds like exactly what I‘ve been looking for! 6y

I confess. Sometimes I only read headlines. And I don‘t make a lot of time to watch the news. But it‘s hard to miss the Russia controversy. Roulette takes all those headlines, puts them in a logical, primarily chronological, order and compels the reader to stop and take notice. It‘s connect-the-political-dots for the average person. Sometimes it even reads like a spy novel. It‘s excellent!

Very informative. I learned a lot and feel much more invested in the scandal when it comes on my morning news podcasts. Starts back at the beginning of Obama's presidency, and walks through the events through shortly after Trump's inauguration. As I was listening to this while driving, Butina was arrested right after I had listened to a part mentioning her! And she was arrested for exactly what this book claims, (cont.)

rjsthumbelina ...which tells me the journalism here is probably pretty on point. It made me angry to read, bc it's still happening and so many people are getting away with what they've done, but it's very important information nonetheless 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘m going to have to read this one, no matter how much I feel overwhelmed by the disfunction at the moment. 6y

Grateful to @BarbaraTheBibliophage for posting about this, which I snagged on audio from the library and flew through in a day. Incredibly well-written, informative, and disturbing. I don‘t read as much daily news as I probably should (unlike my husband, who spends about as much time reading NYT/WP, etc. articles as I do books), but the reading experience of a book like this - scary and infuriating as the content is - feels really valuable to me.

BarbaraTheBibliophage Wow—you‘re way ahead of me! I‘m finding it accessible and insightful also. 6y
Christine @BarbaraTheBibliophage I didn‘t expect to be so riveted! It propelled me through many chores today. 6y

I‘m just finishing up another book on Putin, his criminal past and present, and now this library hold comes in. I may need a LOT of wine and chocolate to get through two in a row. But we NEED to know!

Jadams89 I actually (gently) banged my head on my desk as I listened to this one. But yes, we need to know! 6y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Jadams1776 I‘m sure I‘ll do the same. Won‘t stop me from listening. 6y
Christine Ugh. We really do need to know. Reluctantly stacked. 6y
rjsthumbelina I'm having to listen to it slowly bc it frustrates me to no end that people knew as far back as they did and he's still getting away with it! I was impressed when I knew Butina's name when she was arrested bc she had been featured in the audiobook the day before, though! 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @rjsthumbelina Good on you for being ahead of the curve on Butina! I‘ve got 21 days to listen to this. And if I don‘t finish, I know one of our sons has a print copy. 6y
rjsthumbelina I was amazed when they arrested her bc they talk about her doing exactly what she was arrested for in the middle of this book! That was what made me realize that this book is seriously deep reporting. Pretty good journalism when they say months ahead of time what someone is doing. Makes me wonder where all their information came from, though! 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa The author who wrote this book is on Meet the Press this morning. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Oh cool - I have to leave right now, but I‘ll look On Demand later. Thanks!! 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @rjsthumbelina This is making me want to just read this book all day!! I think it‘s really important to support investigative journalists like this right now. We need real information not fake news! 6y

Today in “Why do I do this to myself?”🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️
This book examines the relationship with Trump and Russia before and during the 2016 campaign. There‘s really no grand revelation that hasn‘t already gone public, but still an interesting read.

I wasn't expecting to like this book as much as I am (mind you, I'm only in chapter 4). I thought of it as something to read when I was feeling particularly anti-Trump, but theres a lot of history being discussed with the events over the last decade that led up to the meddling. Very interesting- I'm learning a lot from it.

BarbaraTheBibliophage Oooh. I‘m glad to hear your thoughts. This one is on my list!! 7y

The only thing missing in this book is a timeline/Who‘s Who for reference. It suffers without that, because it‘s so dense with details.
To that point, it‘s infinitely fact-check-able. And it‘s clear - the Russians interfered with the 2016 US election. It‘s also clear: many people in the Trump campaign had inappropriate - sometimes illegal - contacts with Russians.
And it‘s clear that an investigation is justified. We need to know all of it.

So I try to keep politics out of my Litsy, because it‘s the last place on Earth that I can.
But I‘m reading this damn book, and it‘s REALLLLLLY hard not to share every infuriating, illegal, insane moment with you all 😮😫🤬

Instead I‘ll share the Table of Contents, & chapter names. I think it serves the purpose. It may also help you decide if you want to read it. (Hint: you do.)

It‘s been a rough winter for my reading plans! I am finally feeling so much better and finding my stride again. I am almost done with this and it‘s a doozy. I‘m sad it‘s not getting the same level of press as Fire and Fury because this is a much better book, rooted in true reporting and sources, unlike the gossip found in Fire and Fury.

Suet624 I agree. This is the book to read. I‘ve only heard the authors and haven‘t read the book yet but I think everyone should know what‘s going on. 7y

Started reading this last night, and I'm riveted. We saw Corn and Isakoff on Rachel Maddow's show, yesterday, and The Housemate and I both wanted badly to read it right away. These guys can write! And what they're writing about is well-researched and documented. Engaging, horrifying, and damning.
