Nowhere but Home
Nowhere but Home: A Novel | Liza Palmer
12 posts | 13 read | 17 to read
The strategy on the gridiron of Friday Night Lights is nothing compared to the savagery of coming home . . .Queenie Wake has just been fired from her job as a chef for not allowing a customer to use ketchup . . . again. Now the only place she has to go is North Star, Texas, the hometown she left in disgrace. Maybe things will be different this time around. After all, her mothernotorious for stealing your man, your car, and your rent moneyhas been dead for years. And Queenie's sister, once the local teenage harlot who fooled around with the town golden boy, is now the mother of the high school football captain.Queenie's new job, cooking last meals at the nearby prison, is going well . . . at least the inmates don't complain! But apparently small-town Texas has a long memory for bad reputations. And when Queenie bumps into Everett Coburn, the high school sweetheart who broke her heart, she wishes her own memory was a little spottier. But before Queenie takes another chance on love, she'll have to take an even bigger risk: finding a place to call home once and for all.

"It‘s what we‘re all trying to do, right? Remember a time that was better... We‘re trying to harness those fleeting moments that turned our ordinary lives into something extraordinary. In the sepia haze of those memories, we are beautiful."

Reading in bed. Only able to catch snatches of time to read so it's been slower going but am enjoying it. #readinginbed #coffeeandbooks

JoeStalksBeck You have beautiful hands 7y
Chelleo @JoeStalksBeck Thank you! When I took the picture I was thinking, "I need a manicure! 7y
JoeStalksBeck Nope you don't. They are perfect 7y
JoeStalksBeck It may sound weird that I say that but my grandmother had the most beautiful hands I've ever seen. Something just stayed with me from childhood about that. I connect it to her and how much I miss her 7y
Chelleo @JoeStalksBeck that doesn't sound weird at all. I recall my grandmother's hands and always notice my mom's. 7y

This book had such a different premise for me. Queenie gets fired fromNYC chef job; returns to TX, works making last meals for death row inmates, TX food, small town culture, Football, looking for "home", family, humor, drama. Wonderfully refreshing.

I believe it's obvious based on my feed that I'm a foodie. So it goes without saying that I enjoy well-written #foodiefiction. Here are three that I've loved and would highly recommend. Make sure you have snacks on hand while you read them! 📚☕🍰

LeahBergen I love these tins! 💗 8y
Chachic @LeahBergen The tins were half the reason why I bought these cookies. Although they taste great too, earl grey rose and strawberry grand marnier.😋😋 8y

A book that makes me smile:

Queenie Wake is back at home in North Star TX after losing her job. A chef by trade, she now works as a chef in a local prison, making last meals for inmates. Her family's spotty reputation is large + everywhere. She just wants to feel at home.

This book is GREAT. There is football, food + the South. I suggest this one most often when IRL people ask for recs!

Great read. I've always thought Liza Palmer was underrated. Her writing is spot on for me. This book is about so many things: careers, family, local drama, social status, Death Row, cooking, finding yourself, claiming what's yours and last but not least, Texas (smokers, brisket, swamp coolers and football) Give it a read! 5 ⭐️

I'm probably biased, but this story of a Texas girl finding herself hit all the right notes. The combination of home cooking, family, small town drama, and self actualization were interwoven with moments of harsh reality and hopefulness. B+
